    The vane work is one of the bank protection methods suitable for the curved river. In the present vane design the effects of vanes are predicted by the bed topography analysis in the lateral direction. Vanes are installed not only in a uniformed curved reach, but in a reach changing from curve to straight or vice versa. For the calculation of bed variation in the latter reach we have to consider bed load movement in the longitudinal and lateral directions.<BR>In this paper 2D bed variation is simulated by the use of 2D flow model considering secondary flow generated by centrifugal force and vanes in the Oono River, and the applicability and problems of this calculation method are described based on this simulation.

    At the present it has been clarified that soil masses covered with reeds that had fallen from the banks are not easily transported and still protect banks by reducing the flow velocity surrounding them. Therefore, this study aims to develop riparian protection measures against bank erosion using soil masses covered with reeds by placing them along river bank at an streamwise intervals. Two experiments on erosion have been done by using undisturbed soil masses covered with reeds that were obtained from the field. One is made by observing the erosion of soil masses one by one in a laboratory experiment. The other is made in at a channel for agricultural use of Hii river to observe an erosion of soil masses for longer period by placing some soil blocks longitudinally along the river bank. The reeds' density resisting the erosion of soil mass is found from the experiments. Moreover, it is proved that soil masses covered with reeds can be available for riparian protection for a long period.

    The flood flow in rivers possesses characteristics of storage and peak attenuation of discharge. A sufficient understanding of these characteristics is essential for the river design. Our past studies have deepened basic understanding of the flood flow and clarified the influence of unsteadiness of flood flow, levee and main channel alignments and trees on flood channels. The objective of this study was to investigate detailed mechanism of the flood flow storage in channels, such as the effect of main channel width, sinuosity and boundary condition on water storage of flood flows. We conducted some experiments for understanding the above objectives. This study has highlighted the importance of consideration of channel storage in river design projects.

    In the previous studies on compound channel flows, experimental channels of simplified plan shape, straight or uniform sinuosity have been used. However, rivers generally consist of reaches of different plan shapes continuously. Therefore, it is important to clarify as a whole effect of channel shape and hydraulic condition on flow and bed formation. In this paper, effects of plan shape and relative depth on sediment discharge were examined And characteristics of flow and bed topography were investigated in a compound channel consisting of different plan shape (straight, curved and meandering). As the results, sediment discharge in compound straight and meandering channel showed a different manner with relative depth variation. And flow and bed topography were affected mainly by the upstream channel shape. Especially, at transition section from straight to meandering maximum scouring occurred due to non-equilibrium of sediment discharge with large relative depth.

    Flood flow in Japan possesses characteristics tat the rate of water level change in rising stage is large. Cross-sectional shapes of middle and down-steam region of Japanese rivers employ compound ores consisting of main channel and flood channels. It is, therefore, required to understand the hydraulics of flood flow through various shapes of compound channels for design of safe and environmentally rich rivers. But, there are almost no reliable reference books describing such hydraulic hydraulics. We focused on unsteady hydraulic phenomenon of flood flows in compound meandering channels, and made a study on effects of channel characteristic and of flood characteristics on storage of flood flow. As a result, we clarified influences which plan and cross-section shapes of rivers, boundary condition at the downstream end and unsteadiness on propagation of flood flow and also evaluated the storage volume of flood flow in a channel.

    Bed scouring protective works with concrete blocks are installed on the downstream bed of hydraulic structures. The bed scouting around bed protective works decreases the stability of the last row block of the structure. Additionally, the hydrodynamic force acting on the last row block is larger than that of any other blocks of its group. So, the last row block is a weak point in the bed protective works. However, the design method for the downstream area of bed protective works is not established because it is difficult to estimate the flow and bed variation there.<BR>In this paper, two-dimensional numerical model for the flow over hydraulic structures, which employs the moving grid system in vertical direction, is developed. The model can calculate hydrodynamic forces acting on the last row blocks of its group, and applicable to simulate the flow in the downstream of two-dimensional hydraulic structures.

    About the heavy rain which brought great damage to Hiroshima prefecture in June 1999, various studies have been made. But, the cause of its heavy rain has not been examined from meteorological viewpoint. Since generation of the heavy rain is considered to originate in the overall weather condition, analysis of the weather data observed widely is important. Then, in this study characteristic of the front and the relevance with generation of the heavy rain have been examined in analyzing the GMS images at the time of the disaster. From characteristics of vector field of moving cloud by the mutual correlating method between the GMS images, we have grasped front position and the generating position of the rainy area moving with the front. Also, we examined relationships between the front positions by the GMS images and the GPV data.

    To solve the water quality problems in the Lake Nakaumi and the Lake Shinji, it is necessary to make clear the characteristics of flow and water level variation in these two lakes. Flows in these two lakes are dependent on each other, because these two lakes are connected by the Ohashi River. We have to investigate flows in the Lake Nakaumi, the Lake Shinji and the Ohashi River together.<BR>We compared meteorological external forces, the water level variation and the flow of the Lake Shinji with those of the Lake Nakaumi. We made clear the propagation mechanism of water level variation in the Lake Nakaumi, the Lake Shinji and the Ohashi River, respectively, by calculating time lags of water level variations in many observation points. Furthermore, the propagation mechanism of water level changes by wind set up was also investigated.

    To explain the riverbank erosion, it is important to determine quantitatively the shear force distribution acting on it. In this study, we use a multi component load cell to measure directly the shear force on the bank. In this way, we obtained the vertical distribution and the depth-average of the shear force acting on the bank. The vertical shear stress distribution was compared to Reynolds stresses near the bank by using LDV. As a result, the usability of the method is high in the direct measurement of the shear force, because the measured values of vertical shear stress distribution were similar to the Reynolds stress distribution near the bank. The slot existing the measured bank portion and surroundings was found to have negligible effects on the flow and measured values.

    Bed regulation works such as groins are effective measures to control the deformation of river bed near hydraulic structures. Myoken-zeki weir was constructed in the Shinano river in 1990. The result of this study shows the bed variation upstream from the weir according to installation locations of the bed regulation work, and the rectifiable effect of the weir on the downsream bed variation. The appropriateness of this measure has been proved by the floods that have happened after the construction. Further, it is confirmed that the results of river bed variation by the field measurement, the physical model tests and the numerical simulations coincide well. It was proved that both methods of physical model tests and numerical simulation adopted in the present paper provided a useful means for the design of river bed regulation works.

    強固に成層化した中海では密度界面の振動が下層の流動に影響する. 中海には窪地が点在しており, 窪地内は貧酸素化しやすい. また, 大橋川へ流入する中海の塩水が宍道湖の水質に関係している. そこで, 下層流れと界面の挙動との関係に着目し, 窪地内の流動と, 下層塩水の大橋川への流入機構を検討した. そこで次の知見を得た.(1) 葭津沖の窪地は狭く深いため流動が生じにくいのに対し, 米子湾の窪地は比較的大きいため流動性が高い.ただし, 窪地内の水質には界面振動による水交換の影響は小さい.(2) 気象平穏時には下層塩水は浅水域を乗り越えられず大橋川に流入しないが, 低気圧通過に伴う西~北西風によって大橋川側で界面が上昇し流入する.

    The main cause of the Hiroshima disaster Junc 1999 is the heavy rain due to the cold front. This heavy rain appeared in the band with small width. It was considered that this concentration of rainfall was under the influence of the mountainous geographical features and the wind fields. A radar rain gauge was effective to know the distribution and the movement of this heavy rain, if we use the ground rain gauge together. It is considered that the radar rain gauge system is effective for short time prediction of rainfall through the movement of heavy rainfall area. We examine the feasibility of simple prediction of rainfall based on the radar rainfall gauge. As the result, it is necessary to consider the change in rainfall due to the mountainous geographical features.

    Nagaoka city area in an alluvial fan is dangerous in flood control, because the Shinano River flows fast, meanders and attacks the area. Safety of levees is a serious problem. After the alignment of low water channel was examined in a hydraulic model experiment as well as a training levee, a low water revetment has been executed the work since 1975. About 25 years have passed, the site observationresults were compared with the hydraulic model experiment results about changes of a riverbed and reduction of flow attacking effect. The effect of training levee, which is main concern of this planning, is evaluated by numerical simulation.

    Groin is expected to be used for various purposes. For each purpose, groin arrangement has been studied comprehensively through observations, experiments and numerical analyses.Flow around a groin has 3-D characteristic. For practical applications, a quasi-3-D numerical model is developed with introduction of hydrodynamic force on groin to predict flow and bed topography. The hydrodynamic force is introduced theoretically by volume integration of Filler equation.<BR>2-D numerical analysis is not effective very much for 3-D flow around a groin. But the 2-D using hydrodynamic force on groin and boundary condition of periodicity is effective in respect of workload. The 2-D numerical model is considered to be able to predict reduction of velocity due to presence of groins. In this paper, we discuss characteristics of experimental flow separation. Pressure fields around the submersible groins for different groin angles from experiment is compared with the 2-D numerical analysis having static pressure distribution. It also describes about capability and scope of application of the 2-D numerical analysis.

    There are many flows with submersible large roughness elements in nature. In order to understand these flows, it is important to clarify resistance of the large roughness elements and flow around them. For this purpose, a numerical model together with physical model tests, which can estimate the resistance and the flow, is necessary. In this paper, drag forces acting on submersible large roughness elements were measured directly through experiments. A numerical computation method using a two-dimensional shallow water model which employs the general curvilinear coordinate system is developed and made possible to evaluate the resistance of submersible large roughness elements. The model is applied to simulate flows with a group of submersible large roughness elements and in an urban district, where submersible and non- submersible houses are arbitrarily arranged.

This paper presents a comparison between experimental results and a 2-dimensional unsteady flow numerical model simulations of flood propagation in a compound meandering channel. The model is based on a finite volume discretization on a staggered grid with upwind scheme in flux is presented, it handles drying and wetting process for a flood plain, complex geometry and discontinuities, which are the main requirements for modeling compound channel flows.     Flow near riverbank erosion was examined to investigate mechanism of bank erosion through experimental study of flow field of model bank erosion shape in the authors' previous study. This paper presents prediction of flow field near bank erosion. A numerical model is developed to compute two dimensional flow velocity and water depth for different model bank erosion shapes. The purpose of this study is to reproduce measured flow field of the model bank erosion shape. Curvilinear coordinate system is used in this analysis to obtain the bank erosion shape appropriately. The model could predict the flow field inside bank erosion for small erosion surface angle (equal or less then 4 degrees) with higher accuracy. It is also able to reproduce flow field inside erosion part for larger erosion surface angle (8degrees), but absolute value of the computed velocity is larger than the measured velocity.

    This paper presents a basic analysis of deposition and erosion processes as an important aspect of sediment management in reservoirs. For this purpose, field data from Haji dam reservoir was analyzed to evaluate the mechanism of sediment deposition and its dependence on the hydraulic conditions especially during floods. This study also includes laboratory experiments and numerical computation to assess these processes under different conditions. Regarding the numerical computation, the bed transients in our experiments were better simulated when the Einstein resistance law was used to compute the effective shear stress in the Ashida-Michiue's sediment transport formula, in comparison to the case using the traditional formulation.

    Lake Nakaumi which is a brackish lake has strong pycnocline, so that dissolved oxygen in the bottom layer is often depleted. We studied the flow field which was caused by wind-driven current and inflow and outflow depending on change of atmospheric pressure. We also studied the effects of flow on the behavior of the anoxic water mass. The following results were obtained; (1) Seawater inflow and wind-driven current by approach of the low atmospheric pressure carry dissolved oxygen into bottom layer of Yonago Bay. (2) During the period of mild weather, internal wave in the back of Yonago Bay is different from that generated in the other area of the lake. The anoxic water mass moves from the back of the bay towards the center. (3) In the back of Yonago Bay, oxygen consumption due to decomposition of the detritus in the water column is nearly equal to that by bottom sediments.

    In this paper, the characteristics of floods in small urban rivers are examined using well-observed rainfall and water-level data. In an urbanized area where the sewer systems are well maintained, rainfall-runoff relation is extremely linear. If the rainfall is concentrated downstream of a river, the peak discharge becomes larger and the hydrograph becomes sharper than the other cases. In order to reflect precisely the areal distribution and fluctuation of rainfalls, a flood analysis model which divides a basin into sub-basins is built. The model can finely reproduce the flow phenomena of small urban rivers. With the proposed model it is possible to clarify the runoff characteristics corresponding to different types of rainfalls.     In order to constnict the countermeasures against flooding, a floodwater simulation model with a high degree of accuracy is required. We constnicted a new numerical simulation model in an urban residential area to apply a two dimensional shallow water model. This model employs the general curvilinear coordinate system to reproduce the road network and houses and considers the hydrodynamic force acting on the houses. We estimated the force by the experiments. The applicability of the model was verified by reproducing the results obtained from large scale hydraulic model experiments. Finally, the model was used to carry out case studies of actual urban districts and the countenmeasures were investigated.

    The experimental and theoretical study in a curved channel are performed on the flow and bed profiles near the overhanging bank that is often seen in the natural bank and bank with common reed. As the results of this study, the overhanging bank shows the control of secondary flow around the outer bank and the resulting scouring rate. Those results indicate that k-&epsilon; model is applied for solving flow around overhanging bank, and the solutions of this model are in good agreement with the experimental results of the shear stress distribution, flow and bed profile in the curved channel with overhanging bank.

    Horizontal large eddies and water level fluctuation appear periodically near vegetations in river flow. To estimate the flow pattern and water level fluctuation 2D-numerical model was developed. Experiment and 2D-numerical analysis of the river flow were performed focussing on the lateral mixing due to horizontal large eddies. The computational results of flow pattern and water level fluctuation agreed with experimental results. As the result, it became clear that flow pattern and distribution of shear stress in the river flow with vegetations can be estimated accurately, by the mothod presented in this paper.

    In order to evaluate the impact of bridge piers in a river on their downstream channel and hydraulic works, it is necessary to develop some effective numerical methods for estimating local scour as the supplement of the hydraulic model experiment. This study is intended to construct a three-dimensional numerical simulation model for the local scour around a bridge pier by improving Fukuoka's three-dimensional model in the computation of water flow and considering appropriately the non-equilibrium sediment transport in the calculation of bed variation. It is shown that the numerical simulation model can obtain, with adequate accuracy, solutions that are in good agreement with the experimental results of the local scour from the large-scale hydraulic model.

    While the water plants in small rivers through city play an important roll on the environment of rivers and have a function to purify the water quality, the water plants increase the roughness of a water channel. In Nikaryo channel passing through Kawasaki city, we surveyed the distribution of water plants and measured the velocity profiles at cross-section with water plants. It was revealed that the states of water plants varies with the passage of time and the area occupied by water plants becomes the dead water zone. And it was showed that the longitudinal water level distribution could be evaluated, applying the sheer stress model using the boundary mixing coefficient to the flow in the open channel with the water plants, and Manning's roughness coefficient N of the flow with water plants is about 0.08.

    Discussions have hardly been made on the plan of inhabited district on the so called super levee from the viewpoint of considering flood disaster prevention.<BR>In this paper, basic ideas of newly inhabited district constructed on the super levee are proposed for accomplishing both functions of dissipating the energy of the flow of overtopping flood water and that of good living circumstances. Severalplans of the arrangement of tall buildings, houses and streets to properly dissipate the energy of overtopping flood flow are shown here according to the policy to haveoverflow water concentrated on streets or not.

    The bed Scour near the outer bank in the curved reach of natural rivers is generally caused by the secondary flow and it tends to become exaggerated by the formation and movement of alternate bars, Experimental and theoretical works are conducted in order to investigate that vane works provide a useful means to reduce the scour depth even in such a curved channel. The lateral bed profile obtained by the theory is found to be in a fairly good coincidence with observed one and the PWRI vane functions well so as to reduce the scour depth produced by the secondary current and alternate bar formation

    The vane work is a new hydraulic structure for protecting river bank from erosion and it is important to establish reasonable vane design method for proper use of vane works. The influence of the attack angle of secoundary flow towards vanes on scour depth of the bed near outer bank is examined and a correction factor f for it is introduced reasonably to determine the longitudinal spacing ofvanes based on the existing PwRI's design method. Existing two design methods of vanes, PYRI method and IIHR method, are compared from hydraulic and economical stand points on the basis of natural river data. It became clear that PwRI design method is more reasonable and economical than IIHR one, judging from all the aspects of vanes.

    The optimum arrangement of the groyn has been determined mainly by hydraulic model experiments. This method has a weak point not to be able to determine groin arrangement to river courses with arbitrary alignment. At the atandpoint that the numerical model and the hydraulic model test are complemental to each other, three dimensional numerical model was developed to decide the optimal arrangement of the groin This model includes the influence of forces exerted by groins on the flow of rivers. The result of calculation corresponded so much to that of existing experiments with regard to the state of the three dimensional flow and the river bed change, and also this model enabled us to decide the optimum arrangement of the groin to the river with arbitrary alignment.

    Comprehensive field observations have been conducted to investigate characteristics of flood flow in the Hinuma River. The observations revealed that the water stage had irregular profiles due to longituidinal variation in the roughness consisting of luxuriant vegetations on the flood plains. The irregularity of flow profiles couldn't be reproduced well by the conventional method of non-uniform flow computation. In consideration of these facts, the method of flow computation was improved so that it would be possible to predict flow profiles in channels with luxuriant vegetations with more accuracy, compared with the existing methods.
