Markets change dramatically as technology improves. For example, the smartphone was originally launched as a communication device, not as a camera, but it is now possible to take high-quality photographs with its embedded image sensor. Similarly, borders between industries have become increasingly vague. How can a company adapt to such dynamic circumstances using its own technology and resources? To achieve this adaptation, the author considers two approaches: the first examines solutions that depend on the external environment such as the Internet of Things (IoT) and deregulation. The second inspects the activity level of the company. This paper introduces a ‘Technology Deployment Map’ (TDM) that extracts the activity levels and concludes with a perspective on dynamic capability through applications of the map.

In collaboration with the Sangikyo Corporation, the present authors investigated the manner in which an organizational policy of learning from failure can be effective in a working system. Sangikyo employees completed a web-based questionnaire assessing how perceived distance, which was used to analyze the cognitive behaviors of employees in the working system, contributes to Self-reflection. In terms of the Self-reflection cluster in the plot analysis, we found that employees made continuous efforts to accumulate experience in the extant field of operation, which involved the company's current organizational culture, rather than taking on challenges to develop new business. Thus, the organizational culture makes experience a core value in cases where learning from failure is working well. Additionally, the further development of the working system is discussed to address outstanding issues.

In this paper, the method of downsizing 4K uncompressed video signal generator is introduced. It is required large data transmission bandwidth to output uncompressed 4K video signal. A SSD is known as a storage device with large data transmission bandwidth. The conventional technology for producing 4K uncompressed video output was redundant arrays of inexpensive disks technology using multiple SSDs. There was a problem that the size of 4K uncompressed video signal generator apparatus became too large by many SSDs. We have figured out the solution to such problem, by means of the NAND flash control method without SSDs.

Risk recognition training is an important training in construction companies to avoid work-related accidents. The existing risk recognition training is usually conducted on an illustration including explicit risks. However, it is difficult to express dynamic scenarios and surroundings of the scene due to the still illustration. In this study, a video based risk recognition training tool with an eye tracking device has been developed. We applied the tool to discover differences of attentions between veterans and we found out that veterans to do risk recognition based on meta-knowledge (risk recognition process) and domain-knowledge (individual knowledge of construction work).

The decreasing workforce in Japan has led to shortages of human resources and rising wages in this country’s retail and service industries. Under these conditions, the behavior of managers contributes to the satisfaction not only of customers but also of employees.
This paper focuses on relationships between employee satisfaction (ES) and customer contact. It has been established that ES can affect employee behavior during customer contact. In many cases, higher ES leads to higher customer satisfaction (CS). Despite the fact that the relationship between ES and employee behavior differs by employment pattern, most previous relevant studies have not focused on differences according to factors such as whether respondents are part-time or full-time workers.
This paper discusses such differences by employment pattern in the context of our proposed ES–CS model with the goal of contributing to the success and efficiency of the retail and service industries and their human resource management systems.

Why does organization repeat failure? Indeed, fatal failure has been repeated. Most managers in organization, however, know importance of learning from failure since it leads them improve their business performance. One of the reasons is said to be poor organizational memory. Inadequate organizational memory causing incomplete recall does not well contribute to accurate learning.
There is a unique company, which has succeeded in establishing their way to leaning from failure. Executing the learning activity, they have not repeated same failures which were once reviewed with their way. Eventually they have maintained good business performance.
We, in this paper, studied a case of organizational learning from failure in the Japanese company and explored acceleratory factors in the process of organizational memory in the learning. We found that “Computer based memory” like knowledge repository augments “hard memory” like written rule, scripts, routine work and so on, but may inhibit “soft memory” like human memory in the organizational learning from failure in the company. We also found that “hard memory” is more effective than “soft memory” in the company.

Many companies have been suffering from learning from failure even though they understand its importance and make effort to do it. We, in this paper, introduce an engineering company in Japan, which have succeeded in establishing their way to learning from failure and executing it. They have accumulated 41 failure cases since 2005, and they have never had the same failures which they reviewed through their learning system. And they have kept growing and good business performance with their knowledge management activities, including their learning from failure.
We conducted an empirical research on the company, focusing on subduing shame toward their learning from failure. First, we generated three hypotheses related to relationship among intention to participate, individual growth and shame. Second, we collected quantitative data on their learning from failure in this company through questionnaire survey. And we analysed the data with covariance structure analysis with analytical computer software to verify the hypotheses.
We found that “intention to participate” was more effective than “individual growth” to subdue “shame” toward their learning from failure in the co

Many companies have been suffering from learning from failure even though they understand its importance and make effort to do it. Thus a successful case and empirical research could contribute to company which is eager to learn from failure well.
Thus we, in this paper, introduced an engineering company in Japan, which has done well in learning from failure and conducted an empirical research with the company, focusing on rationality recognition of their learning from failure. We found that self-interest including personal skill improvement which got them promoted and/or reworded is more effective to let them recognize the rationality of their learning from failure, than organization contribution based on their altruism in the company.
It was, however, suggested that company matter was prioritized to individual matter in this company when they discuss the two matters – individual growth and company contribution - at same time.

This method was applied to aseismatic mechanisms and is recognized as tacit knowledge for creating a logical structure from the architecture of a five-story pagoda by experimenting a model of the steric balancing toy principle. Consequently, without complex calculations, we were able to define the corresponding data structure in the attribution table of experiment or evaluation, which is worth applying not only to transact past data but also future data via experiment or evaluation utilizing the idea of «market of data.»

Faulting employee would not to disclose his/her defect because employee feels fear to be blamed and shame of being recognized that he/she have made a defect. An engineering company in Japan has established their way to learn from failure and done it well. They have never repeated same failure they reviewed through their way since they established, according to the president in the company. Authors explore how they overcome the feeling of shame in the company, and find that sympathy to colleague is a key factor for success in the learning-from-failure activity in the company. Value can be obtained from data in a concept de-sign process. This requires capabilities, which are our primary research focus. An analytical method with a developed software environment has been proposed to support exploration of capabilities in the merging of data and awareness. Experimental results indicate that a formal semantic approach can make sense of the possible definition of capa-bilities. We discuss the transitional process toward higher quality outcomes generated by participants through a data market.

Many business consulting companies in Japan gradually shifted their core business from business management diagnosis service into systems integration service after 1990’s when they suffered from the economic recessions in Japan. In this paper, the reasons of the shift in the major business consulting firms in Japan are discussed from the academic point of view, quoting related theories like key performance indicators in professional service firm, value network and institutional isomorphism. Then the conceptual business shift mechanism is created by integrating these three theories, and it is examined by the interviews to the four consultants who had worked or worked for the business consulting companies in Japan.

The abductive reasoning model has been discussed in the context of business strategy. However, this model
seems unrealistic for applications in the real business world considering the unpredictable, competitive business
environment. This study improves the model by formulating an experimental case study through a web-based
workplace for generating product ideas. We discuss the possible embodiment of product ideas as the basis for
configuring features through the use of dynamic quality function deployment. The entire concept design process

Making an attempt for new business and innovation to seek better performance is an essential matter for company to keep sustainable growth. Learning from failure is one of the ways to seek better performance, but it is extraordinarily rare for organizations to do it well. This paper reported a successful case study in Sangikyo Corporation in Japan. Since they succeeded in establishing a way to learn from failure, they had accumulated 41 failure case studies and lessons learned from the failures since 2005. In addition, they eventually earned thirty-five fold profits more over the past six years. In this paper, authors explored success factors for organizational learning from failure based on the case in Sangikyo Corporation, from points of willingness to serve, common purpose and communication. This paper however, just showed preliminary hypotheses for further research, and it is necessary to carefully examine them for being concrete hypotheses beyond this paper.

At the IEEE ICDM2013, we applied the dynamic quality function deployment (DQFD) concept to electric truck design. In this paper we introduce the ideas of "concept design" and "range parameter" into DQFD to resolve the conflict between customer requirements and design constraints. To accurately specify the driving range on the highway, we require data, such as average traffic speed, from which we can estimate the air drag. However, these data should be determined by the professional knowledge of traffic or transport operators rather than by an automotive supplier. We posit that the Market of DATA is a worthy mechanism if it abides by this request.

We explore and discuss the possibility of discovering new design concepts for existing immovable objects. Existing immovable objects include such items as buildings or stadiums that are unable to be relocated. By analogy, the positional relationship of some automotive components, such as a door mirror or front lamp, are also unable to be changed. By introducing a web-based application, along with the map of a city or a drawing sheet, we propose a flow model for a design concept informed by art and architectural construction methods. We discuss how the flow model of such a design concept would be applicable for immovable objects by referring to cases of city design and automotive product design. We suggest that an intermediate level of knowledge is a key resource for discovering a new design concept based on connecting immovable objects with their surroundings, which, in this paper, refers to an object's entire context. When considering how to create and frame design the market of data, the question of what is an intention behind the raw data has to be raised. Here a concept of Frame is introduced to capture products consisting of a set of components, such as usage, function, data and material representing raw data. A web based system has been developed to explore an effect of the frame. Although the workplace of the web system is not proposing a type of market of data, the findings are showing how framed components relate with others in generating new product ideas. © 2013 IEEE.

When considering how to create and design Market of Data(MoDAT), the authors hypothesize that the concept of electric trucks (e-Trucks) including electric vehicles would be one of the most interesting and important categories to apply. It is expected to bring innovative technology for sustainable transportation systems such as those that have zero emissions, zero noise, zero oil (use) and zero transportation loss. And to address this matter, the authors discuss dynamic quality function deployment (DQFD) as an objective that has a high possibility of matching the idea of MoDAT. Here "dynamic" means "to use time series data."

Questions arise about how cognition divers based on personal domains of expertise. We have designed a web-based analogy game to promote categorising words in order to facilitate the development of new concepts. Twenty junior high school students, whose membership on a baseball team represented their domain of expertise, played the game involving words related with baseball terminology. We found that conceptual processing through reflection-in-action differed according to whether or not the object of such processing fell within the domain of expertise of the respondent, observing cognitive upheaval in the conceptual processing. Tsugology is the science and technology for dealing with tsugoes, where a Tsugo is the set composed of an intention of a working/living human and constraints which may restrict the way to achieve the intention or other/others' intentions. The incomplete expression by each subject about his/her tsugoes sometimes cause inefficient communications, and may force the restarting of a project because the latent conflicts may get externalized on the way. In Tsugology, we study the expression format of tsugoes for each human, and the process for finding conflict solutions and creating business opportunities of both an individual and of a group of people. In this paper, we present exemplifications to show the expected utility of Tsugology.

The ability to construct concepts is indispensable to both individual and evolutionary development. Our model involves the use of ambiguous stimuli to facilitate decision-making by promoting analogical reasoning. Toward this end, we have developed Web-based exercises in word categorization for the purpose of engaging participants in analogical reasoning that contributes to the integration of words and leads to the construction of new concepts. 12 graduate students and 20 junior high school students were presented with ambiguous information for the purpose of comparison between the senior and the junior students. We hypothesized that the senior students tend to behave with more insight rather than junior students with less activation of thought process. Our results suggested that the presentation of the ambiguous stimuli were associated with unique thought processes, which are consistent with approaches to word categorization that reflect either the experience of insight or the operation of a trial and error strategy, depending on the junior or the senior students. We showed that the senior students tend to be more like insight into categorization design, while the junior as rather try and error behavior, in consideration of needed time and actions in analogical thinking. This paper describes an effect of vacillating in mind in case of concept creation. The
vacillating can be seen at a time of concentration to categorize some specific words by reviewing
the meaning of the words, whilst the effect is empowered with analogical thought that provides an
idea of new concept. The ones who vacillate to some specific words tend to spend time in order to
make sense as valuable scenario until the ones fully understand by themselves. This implies that the
resource management shall be the key for value sensing as the punctual time is required in the halls
    of business.

As our life becomes more sophisticated, our ability to create concepts is indispensable. Based on our concept formation model, which focuses on ambiguous items that cause a change of one's decisions, we developed a web-based creativity support system. This is intended to guide users in the categorization of words in analogical reasoning by forming batches of words to discover new concepts. 20 junior high school students participated in an experiment, where concept formation is expected to be induced by an ambiguous interpretation of presented information under constraints. The result provided some evidence that an existence of ambiguous items corresponds to a diversification of a thought process either as insight or trial & error in categorizing words. The result also showed that the reconstruction of groups for including ambiguous items into some groups accelerates the creation of new concepts for better interpretation. © 2008 Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg.

Most organizations, regardless of size of organization and their nationality, are poor at organizational learning from failure, although it is quite important for improving their performance. There are studies which focus on exploring success factors for knowledge sharing of successful cases. There however may not be enough studies for learning from failure in organization since they are mainly based on qualitative or theoretical approach, not on quantitative or empirical approach. We build in this paper a research plan for exploring success factors in learning from failure and relationship between organization culture and it with qualitative and empirical approach.

This research has been exploring a mechanism on learning from failure from the view point of business process and employees psychological mind set at the small medium company. As far as business process is concerned, the reason why the mechanism to learn from failure is working well is that the assessment to evaluate employees’ performance is made it a rule to focus not on figures such as sales amount, but on employees’ skill set. In view of psychological mind set, employees feel a sense of solidarity among them since their failure could be similar to the one which might possibly be done by other employees in near future, since the type of project is quite similar within the company. The organizational culture seems to derive from employees who make their experiences important in the field so that they feel their capability is also perceived through their experience so as to never make failure again.
