This research has focused on an area along Oi-river from upper to middle-reaches, more precisely, an area from Hirogawara, Sakyou Ward, Kyoto City to Kameoka City. Treating this area over a long duration from 16th to 19th century, it has aimed to reveal the following three points; similarities and differences among each rural communities within this area, the changes of relationships among them, and the transformation of structural connections in the whole local society.
By analyzing these points, this research has brought about the substantial results of the comprehensive and diachronic understandings of the local society.

This research is focused on the daily work activities taking place in agricultural, mountain and fishing villages; by putting emphasis on their mutual exchanges and not on each of them separately, it uncovers the real aspect of those activities. In addition to this, attention has also been given to other factors such as the policies established by the fief's lord, the impact of one village's characteristics on the nature of the regulations regarding its daily work activities, or the actions taken by the population to maintain those activities. Especially striking results were obtained concerning the characteristics of the daily work activities and their mutual relationship, as well as the nature of the various factors related to those activities in the area of Murayama, province of Dewa, and in the fief of Matsushiro, province of Shinano.
The Relation between Peasants and Tenno(天皇) at Yamaguni(山国) Area in the Province of Tanba during the Muromachi Period and the Meiji Restoration

The Yamaguni area in the province of Tanba was intimately related to the Imperial Family during the medieval and early modern periods. So, we made a diachronic study of this area from the Muromachi period to the Meiji restoration. The focus of this study is on the following two topics:
1.For the peasants, what was the significance of the existence of tenno?
2.How did they take advantage of tenno to establish their public order?

We studied the miyaza(宮座) and dozoku(同族) of Yamaguni(山国) Area in the province of Tanba(丹波) during the late medieval and early modern periods. The following is our work.
1. We investigated a lot of archives in the Yamaguni area. And then we selected a lot of documents on miyaza and dozoku.
2. We studied some types of the miyaza in the Yamaguni Shrine of Torii(烏居), the Kasuga Shrine of Kurodamiya(黒田宮), and the Kasuga Shrine of Kamikuroda(上黒田).
3. On the basis of our research results, we wrote some papers about the miyaza and dozoku of Yamaguni area.

The present project, with members from various fields such as archival science, book and manuscript studies, and history, has carried out a comprehensive research of local historical materials focusing on the archival records, books, paintings and writings, buidings, etc., of Yamada Shozaemon Family in former Higashi Ebe Village, Takai District, Shinano Province (now Nakano City, Nagano Prefecture). Growing throughout the Edo period up to the first-rank land owner in Nagano Prefecture and also becoming a member of the House of Peers, Yamada had been known as a reputed family of the place before the War. The project also held lectures on local history twice in Nakano City and finally resulted in 17 articles, including (1) two articles on archival survey and preservation, (2) five on land administration, (3) four on local culture, (4) four on local society, and (5) two others.
Synthetic Area Studies of Villages in Kinai from the late Warring States Era to the Early Meiji Era

This research project aims to analyze synthetically the historical development of villages and areas from the late warring states era to the early Meiji era, based on three sets of historical documents : the documents of Okada family of the province of Kawachi, the documents of Kotani family of the province of Izumi, and the documents of Sanada family of the province of Shinano.
As for the documents of Okada family, the organizing and cataloguing of the unorganized part of the documents is now nearly completed. Through the analysis of the documents between 18th and 19th centuries, we have shown the characteristic aspects of the economic management of the wealthy peasants in the Kinai area.
With regard to the documents of Sanada family, the fruit of the research was published as WATANABE Takashi ed, The Structure and Change of a Han (Fief) Area : A Study of the Matsushiro Han Area in the Province of Shinano (Iwata-shoin, 2005). This book focuses on the relationship between the han authorities and the people in lawsuit cases, for we believe that it is essential to revise the relation between the samurai and the peasants, a major issue of the social status system in early modern Japan, through a new perspective. Additionally, the research was supplemented by analyzing significant topics such as the internal structure of the han authorities, social groups, and intellectual scene in the han. Furthermore, throughout the book, the han area was scrutinized in order to give insight into various relation such as the samurai-peasant relation, the urban-rural relation, and the mutural relation among social status groups. We believe this to be an important accomplishment which synthesizes the studies of social area with the politics of han, the history of cities, the studies of social status, and the studies of thought.

The research on the construction of collecting and sharing system of historical materials information in collaboration with archives

This research intends to construct a system which will make it possible to control information on the historical-materials (archives) in Japan and to exhibit it through the computer network. This kind of system seems to be common to the whole country. After a research conference held in 1999, we designed and produced a concrete system in 2000. In 2001, the system was opened to the public and developped so as to enable us to retrieve the archival information through two or more organizations. The database-part of the system opened to the public was named "Collaboration database for sharing archival information". By using this mechanism any institution in the world which owns Japanese archives is able to input archival information in accordance with General International Standard Archival Description : ISAD(G). Since the system was started in September 2001, six institutions have joined as "edit users" registered by DEPARTMENT OF HISTORICAL DOCUMENTS. Those institutions are inputting data to the collaboration database, and the whole data in it is increasing. lt is expected that "edit users" will increase in the future, and the access and use of this database will also expand. In this system, database servers can also be equipped in difference institutions. That is to say, we can search archival information accumulated to some database servers through the internet. According to the results of our experiments, this system functions effectively. We held an open research conference entitled "The collecting archival information in collaboration with Archives" to announce widely the fruits of our researches on January 10, 2002. About 80 people attended the conference. In this conference, the following issues were discussed and clarified : introduction to database system, reports of experiment results, report on registration of archival information, problems of the publication of archival information by the Internet, relation between the business of the Archives and the electronic data processing, and so on. Details of this conference are recorded in 'Research result report' of this research. The fruits of our research are not only a success in the experiment but also completion of the practical system. We hope to make this database a center of the system for the registration of the archives in Japan.
