Profile

(EN)  Hiroyuki ISOBE has been Professor of Modern History at the German Department of the Faculty of Letters, Chuo University (Tokyo) since 2020. His research and teaching focuses on German colonial history, especially the history of German anthropology and so-called tropical medicine, which dealt with the study of the physical and mental characteristics of the population living in the colonies and, sometimes cooperating with international colleagues, tried to distinguish them biologically or racially from the European conquerors, to portray the colonial territories as an uncivilized world far removed from Germany and thus to justify the racist and discriminatory colonial policy. And beyond that, the anthropologists and tropical doctors working in the colonies, whose scientific careers after the colonial period were recognized not only in Germany but also internationally, very often held leading positions in the academic circles of the Weimar Republic, the National Socialist Third Reich and even the early Federal Republic.

It has often been discussed that Germany's colonial history, due to its short duration, is not able to assert itself as an essential part of German national history. However, the above history shows that the colonial past of the Empire is more than a tiny episode in German history and can pave the way for the comparative, colonial history of knowledge / science of the world powers of the time (this includes not only Great Britain and France, but also Japan, Belgium, the Netherlands and the USA, etc.). For these reasons, it can be emphasized that the historical examination of German colonialism is by no means insignificant, but on the contrary plays a very important role in better understanding the global history surrounding Germany.

"Antiziganism" in our research project is an analytical concept which has been adapted from the historical concept of Antisemitism (Antijudaism as a racial theory). In the case of Antiziganism, it denotes a particular hostility against "zigeuner" ("Gypsies"), an ethnic minority properly referred to as Sinti/Roma. This may take several forms (e.g. consciousness, discourse, behavior) based upon not only group-specific prejudices but also a limited understanding of a modern state or a modern mainstream society. A variety of historical events will be analyzed by this concept of Antiziganism which penetrates the including and excluding logic of a changing civil society and reflects its self-image, especially when this involves the distinction to the others (i.e. "zigeuner") in those events.

In this research project is to assess how the German colonial history affected the post-colonial society of the German Empire. Specifically, the career of those anthropologists and physicians should be shown who began their research activities in the overseas colonies in their younger years and took up a leading position in the academic guild on ground of their colonial experience in Weimar and Nazi era. For this research purpose, numerous historical documents, including especially the colonial documents prepared by the above-mentioned scientists and their scientific works, were collected and analyzed at the Bundesarchiv or the Staatsbibliothek in Berlin. Now the research results should be made known, which could not be fully put into practice during the research period. This includes above all, to publish a research monograph or to make a presentation at scientific conferences.
