    To realize the effective reuse of mechanical parts for the development of a sustainable society, it is essential to effectively manage individual parts over their entire life cycle. For this purpose, we are developing a part agent system using network agents. A part agent manages all information about a part throughout its life cycle and predicts possible states of the part in the near future in order to generate appropriate recommendations for their maintenance. User behavior is important for this prediction because, in the life cycle of a part, its states are affected by the user behavior. The behavior of users is modeled using prospect theory in order to simulate its nature so as to avoid the risk of failure. This paper compares the decisions for maintenance actions in the simulations with and without applying prospect theory. The initial results are presented in a life cycle simulation of the developed part agents. (C) 2017 The Authors. Published by Elsevier B.V.

    Replacement of parts is a crucial task for the reuse of parts. In this paper, functions of part agent we are developing that support the reuse are described. A part agent manages life cycle of a part using a network agent and an RFID tag attached on the part and generates advices for the user on the maintenance of the part in order to promote the reuse. Part agent we are developing to support the replacement has the following functions. First function is to detect deterioration of the part from its sensory data. As an example, simple 3d of manipulator is developed with modularized link structure. Part agent is assigned for each module and generates advice on its replacement. Second function is to calculate the possibility of failures of part based on causal relation among user operations and detected events. Third function is to support users to disassemble used parts. Part agent generates disassembly procedure of the part and shows it to the user using augmented reality technique. In this paper, the planned scheme for part agent to support reuse of part with these functions is described and preliminary result of the development is shown.

    This paper describes the calculation of the point of contact between assembled parts for remotecontrolled assembly using a haptic device with a single degree of freedom (DOF). To achieve such remote-controlled assembly, it is necessary to judge the constraint state and change the movement direction of the part. It is difficult to detect the points of contact between parts around which the rotational movement should be performed. In this paper, we report a method developed for the purpose of determining the contact point using a six-axis force sensor without knowing the geometry of the parts. The proposed method is applicable to cases in which the theoretical contact point cannot be calculated because of errors and fluctuations in the sensory data. The effectiveness and precision of the method are evaluated through experiments and simulations.

    Managing information on individual parts throughout their life cycle is a requisite to promoting their reuse. To do so, we have been developing a part agent system that uses network agents and RFID technology. A part agent proposes appropriate maintenance actions for a part based on information about its life cycle.     Because performance testing using actual products is costly, manufacturers use lower-cost Computer-Aided Design (CAD) simulations. In this paper, we focus on hexahedral meshes, which are more accurate than tetrahedral meshes, for finite element analysis. Our final objective is automatic hexahedral mesh generation with sharp features to precisely represent the corresponding features of a target shape. Our hexahedral mesh is generated using a voxel-based algorithm. In our previous works, we fitted the surface of the voxels to the target surface using Laplacian energy minimization and used normal vectors in the fitting to preserve sharp features. However, we were unable to precisely represent sharp concave features using the method. In this proposal, we improve the previously used Laplacian energy minimization by adding a term that depends on facet normalmatching for multi-normal vectors, instead of using normal vector matching.

    This paper describes a remote controlled assembly using a haptic device. Most haptic devices have six Degrees Of Freedom (DOFs) for a higher sense of reality. However, for assembly operation, the simultaneous motion of parts with only one or two DOFs is required, and force feedback to operators is used only to maintain contact and detect collisions among parts. This leads to the possibility of assembly operations using a haptic device with a small number of DOFs. In this paper, we propose virtual planes to perform remote control of a 6DOF assembly by way of 1DOF user operations. Virtual planes separate the DOFs for user operation and for automatically generated motions that complement the user operation DOF in each assembly operation. A prototype system was developed with a 6DOF manipulator and camera. The system allows an operator to place virtual planes in any position and orientation using a camera image of the workspace. The experiment results showed the effectiveness of the method for remote controlled assembly without geometry information on the parts.

    Effective reuse of parts is necessary to achieve a sustainable society. For that purpose, individual parts should be used with little environmental load. Moreover, because of variety of consumers' preferences and usages, parts should be used with consideration of consumer's characteristics as well as the information on parts. We have developed the part agent system using network agents and RFID technology to manage parts throughout their life cycle. In previous researches, functions of part agents have been developed that supports recall of parts and replacement of parts in consideration of consumers' preference. However, it is also required for part agents to accommodate the state of parts and consumers' characteristics. For that purpose, we developed a function to propose maintenance activities of part using Bayesian Network model. The function calculates the probability of uncertain phenomenon on the part using the model based on the situation surrounding the part such as sensory information and choice of consumers.

    To realise a sustainable society, it is essential to promote the reuse of mechanical parts using lifecycle management. However, due to unpredictable consumer-behaviour patterns, it is difficult to manage products in the use phase of a product's lifecycle. The authors propose a product lifecycle management system using network agents and RFID tags attached to individual parts, to support consumers and promote part reuse in the use phase. We have developed prototype functions of the network agent system on the basis of the product lifecycle of consumer-electronic appliances. This paper describes the functions of a prototype network agent that are developed in order to support consumer activities in the product lifecycle, and results of a simulation to investigate its effectiveness. The functions of the prototype allow the network agent to control the environmental load of a product in the consumer use phase and predict a part failure.     For the management of individual part throughout their life cycle that is a requisite for an effective reuse of parts, a part agent system is being developed that consists of a network agent and a radio frequency identification electronic tag attached to the corresponding part. To develop functions of part agent and methods for effective reuse, an experiment system consisting of computers connected with a network and a life cycle simulator to simulate behavior of parts, users and part agents throughout the life cycle of parts are developed. This paper describes functions developed in part agents and their preliminary results.

    In the communication and sharing of product data, if the difference of the required data quality and the data quality actually incorporated into data is significant, it causes various problems. It is often the case that a creator of low quality data does not realize it unless it is harmful for his job. In most cases, low quality data passed to subsequent processes, such as manufacturing process, cause problems since these are not appropriate from the machining precision point of view or the detailed shape modeling point of view. In these cases, rework or repair of data is necessitated before commencing the target process, which results in significant economy loss and delay of product development. Today's product model data are dumb data because design intents and data quality incorporated are not explicitly represented. Receiving systems cannot know whether the data passed possess sufficient quality for the target job or not. Another problem is that engineers in later processes, such as the manufacturing process, cannot issue data quality related request beforehand in a commonly agreed manner. The problems mentioned above are caused by the lack of a commonly agreed representation of product data quality (PDQ) information. Our proposed solution is designed to enable the communication and sharing of data quality information. This paper reports the development of a PDQ standard (ISO 10303-59), which is a resource part of ISO 10303 Standard for the Exchange of Product Model Data (STEP) (2008, "ISO 10303-59, Industrial Automation Systems and Integration. Product Data Representation and Exchange. Part 59 Integrated Generic Resource: Quality of Product Shape Data," International Standard Organization, Geneva). The objective of ISO 10303-59 is to establish a PDQ model and to enable the use of PDQ data independently or in combination with product data. The developed PDQ information model represents concepts such as data quality criteria, measurement requirements, and measured results. Based on the PDQ model, the PDQ for shape data model, which is a specialization of the PDQ model to 3D shape data quality, is also developed.[DOI: 10.1115/1.3402615]

    The anthropocentric cell manufacturing system (ACMS) discussed consists of a skill-based manufacturing scheduling system, a new on-the-job training (New OJT) system and a safety system. The New OJT was developed using e-learning and automated guided vehicle (AGV)-arm robot as a teacher for CNC machine training. Since the machines and the AGV-arm robot are automatic devices, controlled by computer programs, the dangers might arise during training. Therefore, the safety system is required to ensure that a learner will be safe. We propose a prototype of safety system with designed machine-protection in order to protect the learner from dangerous behaviours during a level 1 training of a New OJT in ACMS. The machine-protection focused on protection from danger using image processing with a background subtraction technique and comparison of objects' position. We also evaluated safety assessments of the learners, consisting of human error probabilities (HEP) and a human error rate (HER). The prototype of this developed safety system showed that the machine-protection certainly raises a warning alarm when the learner rises into dangerous zones during the training. The evaluated safety assessments showed that our designed New OJT training level 1 course performed more efficient safety performance for self-training of the learner.

    Inappropriate data problems due to mismatching of product data quality are always possible in data communication and sharing. In this problem, the data is evaluated as valid within the original system and its initial usage, but problem brake out during the reuse phase of the same data. This delayed problem requires data repair or rework operation in the subsequent manufacturing process and results in significant economic loss.
    As cause, current product data is a dumb model and its quality is not guaranteed. The receiver system cannot identify whether the data has sufficient quality for reuse or not. Furthermore, manufacture's advance notice of their request for data quality is impossible.
    This paper proposes an establishment of PDQ (product data quality) information for communication of data quality that can be used independently or in combination with product data. The PDQ information model presents qualitative measurements according to given criteria, and the measured portion of product data. Based on PDQ model, a PDQ-S (PDQ for shape data) model has been developed. For PDQ-S, industrial guidelines about shape data communication are systematically categorized as the baseline of guarantee.
    The PDQ model is intended to be independent and neutral from calculation algorithm of measurement. As the method of development, STEP (ISO 10303: Standard for the exchange of product model data) architecture was adopted and the PDQ model was developed as a resource of STEP standards. We show an example about combination of shape data and concerned quality guarantying data.

    The skilled workers-based scheduling method was developed using the evaluation of workers skill levels and the application of genetic algorithm. The scheduling method was presented through the workers gantt-chart. The scheduling performance indexes were evaluated by a free time index (FTI), a skill level index (SLI), and a working time index (TWI). The results showed that the maximum of FTI and the SLI indicated significant improvement in production efficiency. Additionally, the lowest of a TWI indicated the minimum differences among man-hour of workers.

    New methods for OJT (On the Job Training) is required as aging and resignation of expert engineers and globalization of manufacturing industries cause the difficulties for effective OJT in conventional skill education. A probable solution is skill education with e-Learning that has advantages on the involvement of elderly expert engineers and the training in remote shops. However, no e-Learning system is currently available for skill education in manufacturing domain such as training of operations of machine tools, hi this paper, a new OJT system with e-Learning on manufacturing techniques is proposed. Important elements of skill education for a new OJT system are identified and the problems are clarified that arise when an educator is not available. A new OJT system including a mobile robot with an arm is proposed to solve these issues. A prototype of the system is built and its effectiveness and feasibility is shown through the experiment.

    Reuse of mechanical parts is required to reduce the environmental load of the products. However, the unpredictable wear of the reused parts may increase the number of the defective products. This causes the difficulty of design when planning the product suitable for reuse. To reduce this difficulty, we propose a simulation method by integrating the wear information with tolerance analysis. The method calculates probability distribution of dimensions of worn parts based on the wear information of parts. The quality of assembled products can be predicted through the simulation. Experimental software is developed based on the method and results on an example of simple mechanism show its effectiveness. A strategy how worn parts should be used is also discussed based on the simulated results.

    It is a difficult task to construct a product model that is a basis and a requisite for managing information about products totally and effectively through their life cycle. ISO 10303 or STEP that is an international standard for the computer-interpretable representation and exchange of product data takes a two-step approach that is, first to model application requirements and generic representation separately and then to make mapping between these two models. However, reviewing Application Protocol standards of STEP, we have found issues probably due to the insufficient mapping methodology. To remove deficits caused by the complications of mapping, we have developed a software tool that helps users who make mapping with graphics. The tool is developed based on mapping model that represents detailed mapping relation between models. In STEP, constraints can be added to the model using EXPRESS formal description language to make the two models consistent. We also have found the basic nature of the language disturb the correct description and understanding of constraints. To solve this problem, we propose a language dedicated for the correct mapping of cardinality that generates constraint description in EXPRESS. With this language, cardinality conditions and aggregate information can be described separately and explicitly.

    For the effective management of manufacturing facilities throughout their life cycle, it is important to collect maintenance data and make use of them for operation and maintenance planning or design of new machines. However, it is seldom that the maintenance data are properly recorded and utilized in a systematic way. To solve these problems, we have proposed a maintenance data management system. In this paper, two major modules of the system are discussed. The first one is a malfunction data collection system which can navigate users to input malfunction cases in a proper format. The second one is a feedback data generation system which induces common causes implied in the malfunction cases by means of the attribute-oriented induction algorithm. An experimental system is applied to malfunction cases of machine tools for demonstrating its effectiveness.

    In this paper, a new method for designing the structure of manipulators based on evaluation of their adaptability to tasks is proposed. In the method, task directions are classified into three kinds of direction; operational direction, constrained direction and free direction. On each direction, condition of constraints by task environment is represented. The tasks are represented by a set of direction and condition of constraints. A new criterion, operability, is defined to quantify adaptability of manipulator to tasks, taking account of mobility in operational directions and immobility in constrained directions. The mobility and immobility is calculated based on the Jacobian matrix of manipulator. The operability evaluation method is implemented, and applied to structural design of manipulators, in which link parameters are optimized by the genetic algorithm. This system can derive suitable structure of manipulator to various tasks. The effectiveness of the system is shown concerning examples of welding tasks.

    The objective of the research work is to develop a product model which is applicable to represent shapes, structures and attributes of mechanical assemblies based on the STEP. In particular, emphasis is given to establishment of a data structure to represent hierarchical relations and connecting relations among the assemblies, sub-assemblies and parts.<BR>A data structure of the product model was proposed to describe the mechanical assemblies. The data structure developed here consists of the entities defined in the STEP and the entities newly proposed to represent the hierarchical relations and the connecting relations among the mechanical assemblies. A prototype of the product modeling system has been developed to input the product model data and to transfer the product model data to the model data for dynamic kinematic analysis.

    This paper represents a new method for evaluating reliability of manipulators by means of probability of task achievement. Since, articulated manipulators have functional redundancies depending on assigned tasks, they may be able to achieve the task even with faulty joints. In the proposed method, reliability is evaluated taking this feature into account. First, the assigned task is resolved into task steps. Success conditions for achieving each step are obtained based on a manipulator model, which is represented in terms of DH parameters. Next, a success condition of whole task is computed from those of task steps. Finally, the probability of task achievement is evaluated by specifying failure rates of joints in the success condition of whole task. An illustrative example shows the evaluation of a seven DOF manipulator applied to an inspection task.

    For bringing out full capabilities of manufacturing facilities, various maintenance activities are necessary throughout the facility life cycle from design to the end of its life. We have been proposing the necessity of a support system for achieving efficient and consistent life cycle facility management based on a facility model. In this paper, the structure of the facility model is presented. The model can represent the hierarchical structure of facilities. It also provides flexible means to represent various technical information relevant to the facility management. The effectiveness of the model is shown by a deterioration evaluation system of the facility. © 1995 CIRP.

    This paper proposes a "distributed anthropocentric FA system" that deals with variable kind of variable quantity production and a thought model for unexpected for a trouble. First, in order to treat variable quantity production, this system is constructed for a distribute-type factory. Second, for the sake of treatment of unexpected trouble, this system is equiped excellent inter-faces for humans using it through a model through which they obtain monitoring information and control the manufacturing facilites. For the purpose of demonstrating the usefulness of the system, the sensor-accompanied data carrier system is examined with respect to the work monitoring system using the multifunction sensor fusion method in particular.

    Lack of systematic education on production systems might undermine human infrastructures of Japanese industries. As production engineers support the current production systems and their development, the education is indispensable that gives students the knowledge and practices on the fundamentals of production systems, their reality and their leading technologies. We developed in our campus of Chuo University an autonomous distributed type factory system that consists of an NC machining center, an NC lathe, an industrial robot, an AGV and other equipments. Using the system, education and practices are performed not only on the basic components of production systems but also on the methodologies such as centralized production, autonomous distributed production using data carrier, and anthropocentric production based on programmable control panels.

    A model-based off-1lne programming system of the robot operations is developed for industrial use. Environment modelling system based on the solid modelling system GEOMAP-III, is developed as a tool for maintaining the information of the working environment of the robot, such as robot itself, parts to be assembled, obstacles, etc., and other necessary information for the robotic tasks. A high-level assembly description language which describes assembly process in terms of the operations on the parts to be assembled instead of motion of the robot itself, is designed. By utilizing the Information of the environment model, the system generates information of the robot motion from this high-level description, simulating the changes in the environment. Feasibility checks of the generated robot motion, detection of collisions between the robot and obstacles, calculation of necessary grasping force, are performed in the process and the results are displayed to the operator for easy debugging of the program. Preparation for sensory Interactive robot motion in the run-time system, is also considered. As examples, some assembly operations are programmed by the system with high-level language.

    A non-conventional laminated broaching tool manufactured by wire EDM is proposed in this work. A prototype laminated broach composed of flat steel sheets is constructed and the viability of laminated broaches is discussed on the basis of the machining performance of this prototype. Despite some apparent problems of rigidity, the laminated broach is seen to perform reasonably well. Potentialities of laminated broaches include reduction in manufacturing time and costs, in-house manufacturing and reduction of broach length. Being remarkably adaptable to automation, laminated broaches can easily produce complex broaching patterns. Moreover, they can be applied to small-batch production. © 1987 CIRP.

    For the promotion of reuse which is effective for the realization of the circular society, a system was developed that gives the advice on the reuse to the user by the part agent which manages the life cycle of an individual part by combining RFID and network agent.Bayesian estimation method was applied to deal with the deterioration and failure that are difficult to predict. A method was developed that generates a causal relation model for the failure estimation based on the deterioration process, and, on the basis of it, generates Bayesian network by giving initial conditional probability by the deterioration simulation. Furthermore, an application method of a product model for simulation was developed, as well as a method to present disassembly instructions for removing parts from assemblies over images of the assemblies using AR technologies.

    本研究において完全六面体メッシュを作成するためには,初期メッシュの作製およびその変形が必要である.研究代表者がこれまでに作成したアルゴリズムは,初期六面体メッシュ生成の段階においても変形の段階においても,入力である点群を参照する.本研究のテーマである分岐理論に基づく特異曲線抽出による初期メッシュ作成を達成するためには生成された初期メッシュが形状表面の特徴稜線に適合しているかが鍵となる.
    つまり,初期メッシュ作成時に表面の特量稜線を参照する必要があり,そのためには入力である物体表面から取得された点群から特徴稜線を取得しておかなければならない.
    そこで,ノイズを含む入力点群に対し特徴稜線を取得する手法を開発した.完全六面体メッシュ生成が全自動であるためにこの特徴稜線を取得も全自動で行う必要があり,ハフ変換等の平面,曲面当てはめ技術を採用した.さらに,全体の高速性を維持するためにハフ変換の替わりにランダマイズドハフ変換を行っている.これにより特徴稜線を取得が高速に可能となった.
    また,既存のアルゴリズムとの兼ね合いから,特徴稜線はそれ上の点群で表現することとし,特徴稜線上以外の点も当てはめ結果の曲面へ射影した.このように入力である点群はアルゴリズムのいたるところで参照される.つまりその品質は完全六面体メッシュ生成の結果に強く影響を与える.よってポアソンディスクサンプリングを用いて品質の向上を行った.

    A method to generate appropriate pairs of sellers and buyers of reused products using part agents considering paths between houses is developed to promote the reuse of products.
    Part agents collaborate and form groups where distances between houses in the group are within a specified limit. In those groups, appropriate pairs of sellers and buyers are generated based on the users’ satisfaction that takes into consideration the specification of the product, its price, its residual life and the distance between the pair of houses. Furthermore, an extended distance is proposed that is defined by difference of the specifications, difference of the prices as well as the distance of two houses. Simulation of reuse of products is performed with houses on grid-like paths to evaluate this method. Part agents distributed in houses cooperate and exchange used home-appliances successfully.
