    Truffle-shaped Cu nanoparticles (NPs) were synthesized by photoreduction of copper acetate solution in the presence of TiO2. X-ray diffraction measurement revealed that the obtained NPs were composed of pure Cu without oxides, which was notable because the photoirradiation was performed under atmospheric conditions, where the Cu NPs are easily oxidized. The Cu NPs were dispersed stably without protectants because the TiO2 NPs adsorbed on the Cu NPs were dispersed, probably due to their electric repulsion.

    Cu nanoparticles have attracted much attention due to their optical, catalytic, and electrical properties. Their syntheses, however, have required hazardous reducing agents. In addition, they are easily oxidized, which destroys their properties. It has also not been possible to control the diameter and the dispersibility for further applications in functional materials. To solve these problems, we have recently synthesized oxide-free Cu nanoparticles adsorbed on kaolinite, a non-dispersive layered clay, by environmentally friendly photoreduction. Focusing on the layer charge of the clay, we report diameter-and dispersibility-controlled Cu nanoparticles on saponite, a dispersive clay, in the present study. The obtained oxide-free Cu nanoparticles were stable under N-2 atmosphere, while they exhibited a fast back reaction to Cu2+ upon exposure to fresh air. The diameter of the Cu nanoparticles could be controlled simply with [Cu2+], because Cu2+ was adsorbed on saponite before the photoreduction. The dispersibility of the Cu nanoparticles was controlled without changing the diameter using the size of saponite aggregates: these were stably dispersed at low [Cu2+], and flocculated at high [Cu2+]. The flocculates could be collected by filtration and the obtained viscous paste was useful for preparing a film with the optical properties of the Cu nanoparticles without aggregation. Therefore, the present study revealed that combining the adsorption of Cu2+ on saponite with photoreduction is a novel and environmentally friendly synthetic method for controlling the diameter and the dispersibility of Cu nanoparticles, and it has the potential to further their applications in functional materials.

    Cu nanoparticles have attracted much attention as an alternative to precious metal Au- and Pt-based materials. However, they have a problem with stability and get oxidized easily. Moreover, their synthesis is carried out with hazardous chemicals and in conditions, which is not environmentally friendly. Thus, both improvement in oxidation resistance and establishment of a novel synthesis method under mild conditions are desired for further applications. To solve these problems, we synthesized Cu nanoparticles from copper(II) acetate by photoreduction at room temperature in the presence of kaolinite, a layered clay mineral with high gas barrier properties. We obtained disk-like metallic Cu nanoparticles adsorbed on kaolinite without oxides. The nanoparticles showed high oxidation resistance in the solid phase. The powder sample was stable and did not get oxidized at all even after 6 months on exposure to fresh air in spite of no apparent protectants, which was revealed by infrared spectroscopy. Namely, the obtained Cu nanoparticles showed a precious metal-like property. On the other hand, the as-prepared Cu nanoparticles still showed the reactivity with fresh air in the suspension. This indicates that the adsorption on kaolinite did not spoil the reactivity of the Cu nanoparticles. Therefore, the present study revealed that the combination of photoreduction and addition of a layered clay mineral would be a promising environmentally friendly way to synthesize oxidation-resistant metal nanoparticles.

    We examined the synthesis of copper nanoparticles by photoreduction, and characterized them using optical spectroscopy, XAFS measurement, and electron microscopy. Ethanol solution of copper acetate with TiO2 nanoparticles was photoirradated. Optical absorption observation indicated that copper nanoparticles were formed in the solution. XAFS measurement indicated that the nanoparticles were metallic, not oxidized. Electron microscopy observation exhibited that the nanoparticles kept metallic even under exposure to air.

    Chiroptically active Ag triangular nanoplates were synthesized by the ligand-exchange reaction of achiral Ag nanoplates with chiral D- or L-penicillamine molecules. Analysis of the chiroptical properties of the synthesized nanoplates by circular dichroism spectroscopy revealed intense Cotton effects, with wavelengths that corresponded to those of the surface plasmon resonances for the nanoplates. Enantiomeric excess and pH dependence of these effects were also measured to explore the origin of the chiroptical activity of the nanoplates.

    Copper nanoparticles (Cu NPs) were produced through photoreduction of a mixture of copper acetate solution and carbon nanotubes (CNTs) at room temperature. The diameter of the NPs could be controlled by the photoirradiation time. HRTEM and XRD measurements revealed that the NPs were composed of a metallic Cu core and a Cu2O shell that acts as a passive layer.

    Chiral Ag:SG (glutathione) triangular nanoplates were synthesized by substitution reaction of achiral Ag:poly(vinylpyrrolidone) (PVP) nanoplates with glutathione free GSH molecules. Analysis of the chiroptical properties of the synthesized nanoplates using a circular dichroism spectrometer revealed characteristic Cotton effects with wavelengths that corresponded well to those of plasmon resonances for Ag nanoplates. X-ray photoelectron spectrometry analysis of their chemical compositions revealed that complete substitution of PVP molecules with GSH molecules proceeds on the nanoplates.

    We demonstrate that gas-born nanoparticles can be transported into solution successfully. Our results show that Ag nanoparticles produced in gas phase are introduced into poly(vinylpyrrolidone) solution without structural changes such as nanoparticle aggregation. It is also shown that Ag nanoparticles in solution show surface plasmon resonance, suggesting that the optical properties of nanoparticles are not impaired by the transport from gas to liquid.

    Ag triangular nanoplates were synthesized by photoirradiation to AgNO3 ethanol solution in the presence of polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) under anaerobic conditions at room temperature. High-resolution SEM and TEM observations revealed that thin Ag equilateral triangular nanoplates, each of which was a single crystal with sharp corners and flat faces presented by {1 1 1} planes, were produced. Analyses of XAFS and XPS have shown that these nanoplates are protected by coordination of O atoms in PVP molecules, not being oxidized as Ag2O. The nanoplates are inherently stable, though they were easily truncated and dissolved if mixed with oxygen or water. © 2009 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

    We examined to establish the simple synthesis method of Ag triangular nanoplates in order to elucidate their growth process. Ethanol solution of AgNO3 was photoirradiated without reduction agents except in the presence of PVP, poly(vinil-pyrrolidone). Electron microscope observations revealed that the shape of the product was Ag triangular nanoplates with sharp corners and a flat face. In situ XAFS and optical absorption measurements suggested that the Ag triangular nanoplates were photoinduced-converted from Ag spherical nanoparticles via Ag truncated triangular nanoplates.

    Production of nanoparticles composed of ionic liquid [C(4)mpyrr][NTf(2)], N-butyl-N-methylpyrrolidinium bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl) imide, was demonstrated by a gas aggregation technique under low pressure. The diameter spectra were measured by a differential mobility analyzer (DMA) and were dependent on the heating temperature. Photoelectron spectra for the nanoparticles diameter-selected at 10 nm were also measured by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and their chemical composition and structure were identified by comparison with photoelectron spectra for neat ionic liquid.     Ag-containing C-60 nanoparticles were produced from Ag vapor interacting with C60 nanoparticles formed by C60 vapor. The particle diameter of the produced nanoparticles was measured using a differential mobility analyzer (DMA). The particle diameter dependence on the Ag vapor temperature was also measured using the DMA. The chemical composition of the produced nanoparticles was investigated by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The experimental results indicated that the C60 nanoparticles worked prominently as a supporting nanomaterial for the Ag nanoparticles.

    C-60 and C-70 monomers were produced by sublimation of fullerene powder under low-pressure conditions, and their electrical mobilities were measured using a differential mobility analyzer. Apparent particle diameter was estimated from the electrical mobility using Stokes law of resistance. Actual particle diameter is discussed herein in the framework of the kinetic theory of gases. The estimated particle diameter is compared with the particle diameter estimated from its crystal structure.

    C-60 particles were formed by a C-60 vapor source equipped with an Am-241 ionizer, and their mobility was measured using a differential mobility analyzer (DMA). Two distinct peaks for the C-60 monomer and the C-60 dimer were observed in the mobility spectra. When the measured mobility was compared with theoretical mobilities for several isomers of the C-60 dimer, the C-60 dimer was suggested to have the geometric structure of a [2+2] 66/66 cycloadduct C-60 dimer. Selective formation of the [2+2] C-60 dimer was also suggested when the peak profile for the C-60 dimer was analyzed using the transfer function for the DMA. The formation mechanism of the [2+2] C-60 dimer in the gas phase is discussed.

    A C-60 monomer as an inherently monodisperse standard particle was produced by a C-60 vapor source equipped with an Am-241 neutralizer, and its mobility spectrum was measured by using a low-pressure differential mobility analyzer (LPDMA). The transfer function was derived from the mobility spectrum and was measured as dependences on aerodynamic and electrodynamic conditions.     Photo-induced reaction of [Fe(III)-protoporphyrin](+) (hemin(+)) ions solvated with dimethylsulfoxide (DMSO) is investigated by using a tandem mass spectrometer with electrospray ionization. We measure the photodissociation yields of mass-selected hemin(+)(DMSO)(n) clusters for n = 0-3 in the energy region of 15 800-28 200 cm(-1). The mass spectra of the fragment ions show the beta-cleavage of carboxymethyl groups in addition to the evaporation of solvent molecules. Yield of the beta-cleavage reaction is found to depend strongly on the excitation energy and the number of solvent molecules. We also examine the metastable decomposition of the clusters following primary mass selection and determine the incremental solvent binding energies and internal energies for the clusters using evaporative ensemble model. From these results, we investigate the reaction mechanism of beta-cleavage of hemin(+) ion.

    A C-60 monomer was produced by evaporation of C-60 powder under low-pressure conditions, and its mobility spectrum was observed using a low-pressure differential mobility analyzer (LPDMA). Pressure dependence for the C-60 monomer in the spectrum was measured in order to examine the influence of C-60 aggregates on the peak profile of the C-60 monomer. Taking into account the diameter of the collision partner Ar atom, the diameter of the C-60 monomer was estimated in the framework of Stokes' law.

    The reaction between C-60 molecules in a 3-keV electron-irradiated C-60 thin film has been studied using in situ Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy and ex situ laser-desorption FT-mass spectrometry (LD-FTMS). The results of FTIR and LD-FTMS measurements indicate that coalesced C-120 species were formed as a main product in the electron-beam (EB)-irradiated film. We studied the kinetics of the reaction by examining the decrease in the amount of C-60 molecules as a function of irradiation time and found that the reaction rate exhibits a linear dependence on the reactant concentration and a third-power dependence on the electron dose rate.

    The interaction between C-60 and Si atoms was investigated using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) for the photo-irradiated Si-deposited C-60 film in order to establish a method of a synthesis for the Si-coated C-60 It was found that the C1s spectrum of the photo-irradiated film contains a peak due to C-Si bonding, while no peak due to C-SI bonding was observed for the film before photo-irradiation. This indicates that Si atoms stick to C-60 when using the present method.

    The structural modification induced by electron-beam (EB) in a C-60 film and its kinetics have been studied using in situ high-resolution FT-IR spectroscopy. Similar to studies on photoirradiated KxC60 film, it was found that a coalescence reaction between adjacent C-60 molecules takes place, In order to investigate the interaction between an incident electron and C-60 molecules, the time-dependence of the amounts of C-60 On the EB irradiation was examined. It was found that the reaction rate exhibits a linear dependence on the reactant concentration and nonlinear dependence on the incident current.

    The formation process of Si-coated C-60, C60Sin (n = 1-60), was theoretically investigated by examining both the geometric structure and standard heat of formation (Delta H-f(0)) for individual C60Sin clusters using a semiempirical molecular orbital method. For a small number of Si atoms (n < 3), it was found that each Si atom is preferentially bound to the 6/6 bonds (double bond between adjacent hexagon rings) of the C-60 substrate independently. On the other hand, for a large number of Si atoms (n greater than or equal to 3), besides the bond formation between Si atoms and the C-60, the adjacent Si atoms tend to form chemical bonds with each other. The n-dependence of Delta H-f(0) for the C60Sin was quantitatively interpreted by the number of Si atoms with dangling bonds in the framework of the isolated pentagon rule (IPR). It was revealed that the Si-Si bond formation is an essential process to successfully synthesize the C60Si60.

    Dissociation dynamics of a size-selected sodium cluster ion, Na-9(+), in collision with a series of rare-gas atoms, He, Ne, Ar, Kr and Xe, was investigated by measuring the absolute cross sections by use of a tandem mass-spectrometer, The dominant processes for the dissociation are Na and Na-2 release from the parent cluster ion. Total cross sections for the dissociation except for the Xe collision is explained in a scheme of classical collision. In the Xe collision, it was found that the cross sections observed were smaller than the cross sections predicted by the classical collision scheme, probably because of long range interaction between the cluster ion and Xe atom. On the other hand, the branching fractions for the Na and the Na-2 release are predicted well by the orbital correlation diagrams for the dissociation systems.

    A collisional reaction of a sodium cluster ion, Na-n(+)(n=3-9), with a nitrous oxide molecule, N2O, was investigated by using a tandem mass-spectrometer equipped with four octopole ion guides. Two types of ions, NakO+ and Na-P(+) (p<n), were produced by the reaction; NakO+ and Na-p(+) result from oxidation and direct collisional dissociation of the parent cluster ion, Na-n(+), respectively. The absolute total cross section and partial cross sections for the NakO+ (oxidation) and Na-P(+) (direct dissociation) production were measured as a function of the collision energy of a given parent cluster ion, Na-n(+), in the energy range up to 5 eV (center-of-mass frame). The cross sections and their collision-energy dependence show that the oxidation proceeds when electron harpooning from Na-n(+) to N2O occurs and otherwise the direct collisional dissociation proceeds. The mass spectrum of the product ions show that the dominant reaction channels are production of oxide ions, NakOi (i = 1,2), and intact ions, Na-p(+) (p < n). With increase in the collision energy, the cross section for the production of the oxide ions decreased, while that for the production of the intact ions increased. The collision-energy dependences of the cross section for the oxide formation reveals that electron harpooning from the molecule to Na-n(+), preludes the oxide-ion formation. On the other hand, the collision-energy dependences of the cross sections for the intact ion formation is explained by a hard-sphere-collision model similar to the collisional dissociation of Na-n(+) by rare-gas impact.

The mass spectra of the fragmented ions show that release of Na and/or Na-2 from Na-n(+) occurs dominantly. The absolute total cross section for the dissociation of Na-n(+) and the absolute partial cross sections for the Na and/or the Na-2 release were determined at different collision energies and cluster sizes. The absolute total dissociation cross sections were calculated by a scheme that f dissociates with leaving Na and Na-2 unimolecularly, On the other hand, collisionally excited Na-n(+) the partial cross sections;for the Na and the Na-2 release were successfully explained by the orbital correlation diagram for the dissociation system; the dissociation channel involving an adiabatic transition was found to be influenced significantly by the collision energy and the cluster size.     The collisional reaction of Na-n(+) (2 less than or equal to n less than or equal to 9) with N2O was investigated by using a tandem mass spectrometer equipped with four octopole ion guides. Oxide ions, NakO+, and intact ions, Na-p(+) (p < n), were found to be produced from the reaction of Na-n(+) with N2O. The collision-energy dependence of the absolute cross section for each product channel was measured at collision energies up to 5 eV in the center-of-mass frame. The cross section for the production of NakO+ decreased with increasing collision energy, while that for the production of Na-p(+) increased. This observation is interpreted as that electron harpooning from Na-n(2) to N2O preludes NakO+ formation. The collision-energy dependence of the partial cross section for the production of Na-p(+) is explained by a hard sphere collision model employed in the explanation of the collisional dissociation of Na-n(2) by rare-gas impact.

    A sodium cluster ion, Na-9(+), having a closed electronic shell was allowed to collide with a rare-gas atom (He or Ne), and collisionally fragmented ions were measured by using a tandem mass-spectrometer equipped with several octapole ion guides. The mass spectrum of the product ions show that sodium atom and dimer are released dominantly from the cluster ion, Na-9(+). The dependencies of the absolute cross sections for the Na and the Na-2 release on the collision energy were determined for collision energies up to 3 eV in the center of mass frame. The cross section for the Na-2 release increases much more rapidly than that for the Na release as the collision energy increases, while the cross sections for the Na and the Na-2 release start to rise at almost the same collision energy of 0.75 +/- 0.1 eV. The collision-energy dependencies are explained by orbital correlation diagrams for the Na-8(+) + Na and the Na-7(+) + Na-2 systems on the basis of a model that a spherical jellium of Na-9(+) is deformed by collision of a rare-gas atom. The total absolute cross sections are estimated by a two-step scheme: collisional excitation and dissociation. (C) 1996 American Institute of Physics.

    We report the formation of dihalide products from the endothermic gas-phase ion-molecule reaction of Cl- with CH3Br at suprathermal collision energies using both guided ion beam and selected ion flow drift tube (SIFDT) techniques. The cross sections for the Cl- + CH3Br reactions were determined using the guided ion beam apparatus over a center-of-mass collision energy range of 2-15 eV with the ClBr- product displaying a maximum near 7 eV. This result is found to be in good agreement (when convoluted with the appropriate velocity distribution) with the rate constant measured by the SIFDT. ICI- and I-2(-) are also found for the Cl- + CH3I and I- + RI reactions at elevated collision energies (less than or equal to 1.5 eV) in the SIFDT. The rates for halide displacement are found to be insensitive to collision energy. These results indicate that attack on the C-X bond may nor provide an efficient alternative to the S(N)2 mechanism for halide exchange in the asymmetric X(-) + CH3Y systems. This conclusion is supported by nb initio calculations (MP2LANL10Z level) which indicate that ClBr- can be formed by collinear attack at the halogen through a Cl...Br...CH3 intermediate.

    Dissociation of protonated methanol cluster ions, (CH3OHH+ (n = 2-23), in collision with He, Ne, or Kr atoms were studied by means of a tandem mass spectrometer equipped with octapole ion guides. The mass spectra of the product ions show that the dominant process is evaporation of CH3OH molecules from (CH3-OHH+. The absolute cross section for the evaporation was measured as functions of the cluster sizes and the collision energy in the range 0.05-100 eV in the center of mass frame. The branching fractions for the product ions were also determined. It is inferred that the evaporation proceed via the collisional excitation and subsequent unimolecular dissociation.

    Photo-induced reaction of [Fe(III)-protoporphyrin](+) (hemin(+)) ions solvated with dimethylsulfoxide (DMSO) is investigated by using a tandem mass spectrometer with electrospray ionization. We measure the photodissociation yields of mass-selected hemin(+()DMSO)(n) clusters for n = 0-3. The mass spectra of the fragment ions show the beta-cleavage of carboxymethyl groups in addition to the evaporation of solvent molecules. Yield of the beta-cleavage reaction is found to depend strongly on the excitation energv and the number of solvent molecules. We also examine photo-induced reactions of multiply-charged cytochrome c ions, (M + nH)(n+) (n = 9-17). Photoionization is found to be the dominant process for the lower charged states (n = 9-12) and its yield decreases rapidly with increasing the charge. The photoionization is ascribed to the emission of electron by multiphoton excitation of heme under the influence of Coulomb attractive potential arising from the charges in the polypeptide chain. Model calculations of the Coulomb potential suggest that the structure of the polypeptide chain is completely elongated.

    ナノスケール領域において顕著に発現されると期待されている量子サイズ効果は、ナノ物質のサイズ(あるいはナノ粒子の粒径)に極めて敏感であるため、そのサイズを精確に決定することが必要不可欠である。しかし従来から行われている外挿法に基づく方法ではこうしたことは実現不可能であった。そこで本研究では、「ナノメートル原器」とも呼ぶべき単分散なナノ標準粒子の系統的な発生法の確立を目的とした検討を行った。
    平成17年度は、前年度開発を行ったコロナ放電型ナノ粒子凝集装置およびナノ粒子発生源を用いて、1〜10nm域における単分散標準粒子の系統的発生法について検討を行った。コロナ放電型ナノ粒子凝集装置を用いたところ、放電電流強度に依存したフラーレンナノ粒子粒径分布スペクトルが得られた。分析装置(DMA)の粒径選別分解能を高めて測定を行ったところ、10量体まで重合したフラーレンナノ粒子のスペクトルが、それぞれ他のサイズから単離して観測されることがわかった。このことは、フラーレンナノ粒子を用いることによって、10量体まではナノ定規の目盛りのように扱うことができることを示唆している。一方、その構造について計算機シミュレーションによる予測を行った。その結果、小さなサイズのフラーレンナノ粒子においては直線型の幾何構造が安定であるのに対して、大きなサイズにおいては球形に凝集した形状が安定であることが示された。一方、ナノ粒子発生源において、フラーレンナノ粒子を金属蒸気(銀など)中を通過させることによって得られるナノ粒子についても調べた。その結果、フラーレンナノ粒子の粒径に強く依存する5〜10nmの粒径をもつ金属フラーレン複合ナノ粒子を生成することがわかった。このナノ粒子の粒径は金属蒸気の発生条件によらず非常に一定の値を示すことから、これらの複合ナノ粒子についてもナノメートル原器としての応用が期待される。

    アルカリ金属をドープしたフラーレンにおいて高温超伝導が発見されて以来、フラーレンを骨格にもつフラーレン重合体あるいはヘテロ原子と結合したフラーレンの示す特異な物性が新世代材料として注目されている。しかしそうしたフラーレン化合物の効率的な合成法は未だ確立されていない。本研究では、フラーレンの超薄膜化技術を利用した新規フラーレン化合物の合成法の確立、およびその反応機構の解明を目指す。
    平成12年度は、反応の"その場"観測装置を立ち上げ、測定結果の定量的解析によるフラーレン薄膜内反応の反応機構の解明を行った。具体的には、(1)C_<60>薄膜内反応のその場観測、および(2)C_<60>-Si混合薄膜内反応のその場観測を行った。またこれと平行して、(3)非対称型フラーレン,C_<70>,の反応への応用の検討も行った。(1)の研究においては、低エネルギー(1keV)電子線衝撃によるC_<60>重合体生成反応の反応速度定数をin situ FTIR測定による実験から求めた。その結果、重合反応は照射量に対して非線形的に進行することを見いだした。また(2)の研究においては、C_<60>と原子状Siの混合により高効率にて反応錯合体が形成されることを見いだした。実際、C_<60>に対し4倍量のSiを混合した薄膜においてほぼ100%の反応生成物が観測された。一方、(3)の研究においては、フラーレンの非対称型化による著しい反応効率の低下が観測された。これは反応に主として関与するフラーレン上の6/6結合部の電子密度が、非対称化により低下することに起因すると考えられる。以上、本研究から、反応はフラーレンを介した電子の授受によって引き起こされること、原子状Siとの混合状態の生成が新規フラーレン合成には重要であること、の知見を得た。
