    We developed a compact system for measuring the flow rate of cerebrospinal fluid in a shunt tube using the laser-two-focus velocimeter with air lumps injected. The range of 3 to 60 ml/h was successfully measured.

    We made direct measurements of temperature-dependent refractive indices of undoped and MgO-doped stoichiometric LiTaO3 to obtain the Sellmeier equations. The thermo-optic coefficients are much larger than those reported by indirect measurements.

    We absolutely measure the second-order nonlinear-optical coefficients of LaBGeO5 at the fundamental wavelength of 532 nm. The determined coefficients are d33=1.15, d22=1.41, d31=d32=0.75 and d11=0.55 pm/V, which are inconsistent with those previously measured at 1064 nm.

    The density of dislocations that occur in the intrinsic (i-) layer of a pin diamond diode was estimated from two-photon excitation photoluminescence (2PPL) imaging. Results elucidated data obtained from device characteristic measurements and cathodoluminescence (CL). Generation and diffusion of free carriers for deep-level emission in the i-layer have no effect on emission images observed using the 2PPL method. Therefore, to evaluate the pin diode structure, the influence of free carrier propagation on the adjacent layer can be avoided. However, this effect cannot be ignored when using CL. These findings are expected to be important for assessing diamond device performance.

    We have succeeded in bonding a Nd: YAG crystal and an anti-reflection coated diamond crystal to realize a composite laser which minimizes the Fresnel-reflection loss at the bonded interface for the first time. This newly developed composite laser has realized higher output power at higher pump power than a non-composite Nd: YAG laser while keeping nearly the same slope efficiency.     We accurately measure the electro-optic (EO) coefficients of undoped and 1.7 mol% MgO-doped stoichiometric LiNbO3 (SLN) using high-quality crystals and a reliable AC-field applying method. The EO coefficients at the wavelength of 633 nm are determined to be r(33) = 30.2 +/- 0.6 pm/V and r13 = 9.1 +/- 0.2 pm/V for undoped SLN, and r(33) = 29.8 +/- 0.2 pm/V and r13 = 9.1 +/- 0.04 pm/V for MgO-doped SLN. The obtained values are found to be nearly the same with those for congruent LiNbO3. (C) 2017 Optical Society of America

    Using the room-temperature-bonding technique, we have succeeded in fabricating a quasi-phase matching stack of thirty 106 mu m-thick and 5.5 x 5.0 mm-aperture GaAs plates for high-power second-harmonic generation of CO2 lasers with the wavelength of 10.6 mu m. Although its transmittance was lower than that of a single GaAs plate because of inclusion of small particles in the bonded interface, newly fabricated twenty stacked GaAs plates with the improved process show nearly the same transmittance with that of a single plate.     Dual-comb spectroscopy (DCS) is a new Fourier spectroscopic method which realizes precise and rapid spectral detection with a broad bandwidth. In this study, we applied DCS to characterization of birefringence of anisotropic materials. As a demonstration, we evaluated the refractive index and the birefringence of an anisotropic crystal, Nd:YVO4. We confirmed the evaluated values were consistent to some reference data, and our proposed scheme was successfully performed as the precise and rapid characterization method of the birefringence. It is expected that this technique will become a useful tool in a wide range of applications such as laser developments.

    We have directly bonded a laser crystal and a copper block without an indium sheet using the room-temperature-bonding technique to develop more effective and reliable holder structures for high-power solid-state lasers. Moreover, a new structure with a copper foil between a laser crystal and a copper block has been fabricated to realize more cohesive bonding.

    Using the room-temperature bonding, we have succeeded in fabricating a quasi-phasematching stack of GaAs plates with low loss. The SHG efficiency is found to be nearly the same within the whole aperture of the device.

    The refractive index of a potassium dihydrogen phosphate (KDP) crystal strongly depends on the deuteration fraction of the crystal. The wavelength dependence of the phase-matching angle in the near-infrared optical parametric process shows convex and concave characteristics for pure KDP and pure deuterated KDP (DKDP), respectively, when pumped by the second harmonic of Nd- or Yb-doped solid state lasers. Using these characteristics, ultra-broadband phase matching can be realized by optimization of the deuteration fraction. The refractive index of DKDP that was grown with a different deuteration fraction (known as partially deuterated KDP or pDKDP) was measured over a wide wavelength range of 0.4-1.5 mu m by the minimum deviation method. The wavelength dispersions of the measured refractive indices were fitted using a modified Sellmeier equation, and the deuteration fraction dependence was analyzed using the Lorentz-Lorenz equation. The wavelength-dependent phase-matching angle for an arbitrary deuteration fraction was then calculated for optical parametric amplification with pumping at a wavelength of 526.5 nm. The results revealed that a refractive index database with precision of more than 2 x 10(-5) was necessary for exact evaluation of the phase-matching condition. An ultra-broad gain bandwidth of up to 490 nm will be feasible when using the 68% pDKDP crystal. (C) 2015 AIP Publishing LLC.

    We analyze a solution of the heat equation for second harmonic generation (SHG) with a focused Gaussian beam and simulate the temperature rise in SHG materials as a function of the second harmonic power and the focusing conditions. We also propose a quantitative value of the heat removal performance of SHG devices, referred to as the effective heat capacity C-alpha in phase matched calorimetry. We demonstrate the inverse relation between C-alpha and the focusing parameter xi, and propose the universal quantity of the product of C-alpha and xi for characterizing the thermal property of SHG devices. Finally, we discuss the strategy to manage thermal dephasing in SHG using the results from simulations. (C) 2014 Optical Society of America

    We directly measured phase-matching directions of second harmonic, sum, and difference frequency generations in the Langatate La3Ga5.5Ta0.5O14 (LGT) uniaxial crystal.     This paper describes the first demonstration of ultraviolet (266nm) vortex generation using the combination of a frequency-doubled nanosecond green laser, a spiral phase plate, and a periodically bonded beta-BaB2O4 device.     Mg-doped stoichiometric lithium tantalate (SLT) is a promising material in high power generation, due to its high thermal conductivity. The accuracy of the temperature-dependent Sellmeier equation for Mg-doped SLT is important for designing high-power-frequency converters. We propose a temperature-dependent Sellmeier equation for the extraordinary refractive index of 1.0 mol % Mg-doped SLT. The equation is fitted with measured data in the first-order quasi-phase-matched (QPM) second harmonic generation (SHG) and optical parametric oscillation (OPO) with the fundamental and pump wavelengths being both 1.064 mu m and previously published data [Jpn. J. Appl. Phys. 41 (2002) 465] of SLT. The equation allows us to predict accurate QPM periods in the range of 0.5-4 mu m wavelength and in temperature range of 30-170 degrees C.     Object. The CSF shunt valve is a medical device whose main function is to regulate intracranial pressure and drain excess CSF. The authors have developed a new therapeutic method for treating hydrocephalus, namely the tandem shunt valve system, which has the potential of flexibly controlling the CSF flow rate and intracranial pressure in patients.
    Methods. The properties of the tandem system were verified by performing in vitro experiments. An in vitro system with a manometer was built to measure pressure and flow rates of water in open systems using the Codman Hakim Programmable Valve and the Strata adjustable pressure programmable valve. A single valve and 2 single shunt valves connected in series (the tandem shunt valve system) were connected to the manometer to check the final pressure.
    Results. Conventional single shunt valve systems require valve pressures to be set higher to slow down the CSF flow rate, which inevitably results in a higher final pressure. On the other hand, the tandem shunt valve system uses the combination of 2 valves to slow the CSF flow rate without increasing the final pressure.
    Conclusions. The authors succeeded in experimentally demonstrating in vitro results of tandem systems and their effectiveness by applying a model to show that the valve with the higher pressure setting determined the final pressure of the entire system and the flow rate became slower than single shunt valve systems.     We have determined all the three independent components of quadratic nonlinear-optical coefficients of ZnO by highly accurate Maker-fringe measurements on high-quality bulk samples combined with theoretical analyses taking account of the multiple-reflection effects. The obtained values of quadratic nonlinear-optical coefficients are d(31) = 2.0 +/- 0.1 pm/V, d(15) = 2.1 +/- 0.1 pm/V, and d(33) = -6.2 +/- 0.3 pm/V at the fundamental wavelength of 1.06 mu m. This shows that the ratio d(33)/d(31), which is estimated to be -3.0, is deviated from the widely used value of -2 predicted for idealized wurtzite crystal. (c) 2012 Optical Society of America

    We have fabricated a second-harmonic-generation device with a new walk-off-compensating structure of beta-BaB2O4 (BBO) by room-temperature bonding. The 5-mm-long device, which consists of four 1-mm-thick plates and additional input and output plates of 0.5mm thickness, generated nearly twice the UV second-harmonic power compared with a bulk BBO crystal. Moreover, we found that the device can improve the beam shape of the output UV light, which is otherwise degraded in a bulk crystal due to the walk-off effect.     We proposed a method to determine device quality in heat removal. Temperature change depending on SH power was analyzed by fitting with a new model to characterize heat removal performance of SHG modules, named as phase-matched calorimetry (PMC). The thermal disposal performance of SHG devices was improved by combination of metal housing and reduced crystal aperture. With a tight aperture, we demonstrated a 19 W single-pass 532-nm SHG at a conversion efficiency of 26.5% in a 10-mm-long PPMgSLT crystal without saturation. (C)2011 Optical Society of America

    We have determined all the three independent components of quadratic nonlinear-optical coefficients of GaN by highly accurate Maker-fringe measurements on high-quality bulk samples combined with theoretical analysis taking account of the multiple-reflection effects in slightly misoriented optically anisotropic samples. Especially, the d(33) coefficient is determined with sufficient accuracies for the first time, to our knowledge, by using (11 (2) over bar0)-oriented samples. The obtained values of quadratic nonlinear-optical coefficients are d(31) =2.5 +/- 0.1 pm/V, d(15)=2.5 +/- 0.1 pm/V, and d(33)=-3.8 +/- 0.2 pm/V at the fundamental wavelength of 1.064 mu m.     The second-order nonlinear optical coefficients of 4H-SiC and 6H-SiC have been measured by use of two second-harmonic generation methods, the rotational Maker-fringe and wedge techniques, at the fundamental wavelength of 1.064 mu m. Measurements on high-quality (0001) and (11 (2) over bar0) plane samples as well as rigorous analyses taking into account the multiple-reflection effects allowed us to accurately determine the magnitudes of the nonlinear optical coefficients.     Second-order nonlinear-optical coefficients of 4H and 6H-SiC have been measured with the wedge technique. Using high-quality (11-20) samples as well as performing rigorous measurements and analyses, the three independent components, d(31) (=d(32)) d(15) (=d(24)), and d(33), have been accurately determined. We have found that the nonlinear-optical coefficients are nearly the same between the measured 4H and 6H-SiC samples within the experimental accuracy; d(31) = 5.4 pm/V, d(15) = 6.2 pm/V, and d(33) = 9.7 pm/V.

    What we believe to be a new mathematical procedure has been proposed for analyzing the rotational Maker-fringe data taking account of the effects of multiple reflections and interferences of the fundamental and second-harmonic beams in anisotropic plane-parallel plates. In the present formalisms partial overlaps of the fundamental and second-harmonic beams are fully included. A comparison between numerical simulations based on the proposed formalisms and experimental data obtained for a high-quality (0001) plane-parallel plate of 6H-SiC revealed the validity of our theory. We have determined the magnitudes of the nonlinear optical coefficients of 6H-SiC as d(31)=d(32)=6.7 +/- 0.8 pm/V, d(15)=d(24)=6.4 +/- 1.1 pm/V, and d(33)=-9.7 +/- 8.0 pm/V.     Thermally-induced-birefringence effects of Nd:YAG ceramic lasers are accurately measured. Depolarization for the ceramics is found to be nearly the same with that for (111)-cut single crystals if Nd3+ concentration is the same. Under non-lasing condition, the thermally-induced birefringence becomes larger as Nd3+ Concentration increases due to severer quenching. Under lasing, however, depolarization is measured to be one-third of that under non-lasing because the stimulated emission reduces the nonradiative process, which decreases the thermal load. Moreover, direct pumping into the emitting level by use of a 885 nm pump source intrinsically reduces the heat generation compared with the conventional 808 nm pumping; we have experimentally verified that the depolarization and the thermal load are reduced by 30% by the direct pumping.     Radiation in the wavelength range from 6.0 to 6.2 mu m, which is in a highly absorptive region of LiNbO3, was generated. A 5 mol % MgO-doped, periodically poled LiNbO3 was used as an optical parametric oscillator. The oscillator was pumped by a Nd:YAG laser with an I I ns pulse duration. The signal and idler waves generated were focused on another periodically poled LiNbO3 for difference frequency generation. The maximum pulse energy obtained was 0.21 mu J at 6.05 mu m.

    Signal and idler wave spectra from an optical parametric oscillator were analyzed. Quasi phase matching in 5 mol.% MgO-doped periodically poled lithium niobate was used to generate infrared radiation. The dependences of the wavelengths of the signal and idler waves on the grating period and the temperature were precisely measured. The wavelengths of the signal and the idler waves deviated considerably from the predictions of Sellmeier equation, especially near the degenerate point.

    We have demonstrated high-energy quasi-phase-matched optical parametric oscillation in a 3-mm-thick periodically poled 5-mol. % MgO-doped LiNbO3 device with a 32.1-mum grating period and a 30-mm length. With a large-spot-size pump laser of 2.2-mm diameter, we obtained a total output pulse energy of 22 mJ for both the signal (wavelength 1.82 mum) and the idler (2.56 mum) waves at an input pump energy of 46 mJ.     A continuous-wave high-power Nd:YAG laser operating on the F-4(3/2) --> I-4(9/2) transition at 946 nm and intracavity frequency-doubled to 473 nm by a KNbO3 nonlinear crystal at room temperature is reported. The Nd:YAG laser outputs a randomly polarized beam of 3.8 W maximum power (38% optical-to-optical efficiency and 44% slope efficiency with respect to the absorbed pump power) at the 946 nm fundamental wavelength. Intracavity frequency-doubling with a 2.0-mm thick KNbO3 crystal in a linear resonator yielded 159-mW single-ended blue-output with 4.8% optical-to-optical conversion efficiency versus the absorbed pump power. The 473-nm maximum power of 418 mW with 11.6% optical-to-optical conversion efficiency in absorbed power was obtained from a V-type resonator; the overall optical-to-optical conversion efficiency was 6.7%, while the conversion of the available infrared power reached 50%.     This work reports on a beam quality and dynamic behaviors of a mirror-coated highly-doped YAG (Y3Al5O12) microchip ceramic laser possessing an increased number of grain boundaries. The degradation of beam quality factor in transverse patterns due to spatial inhomogeneity across the beam, multiple split-mode operations, violation of antiphase dynamics and high-speed intensity modulations due to the interference between non-orthogonal transverse modes were observed in a laser-diode end-pumping scheme.     Continuous-wave high-power green light generation at room temperature is reported in a single-pass frequency-doubling configuration with bulk periodically poled MgO:LiNbO3 crystal placed outside a diode end-pumped Nd:GdVO4 laser. The MgO:LiNbO3 samples of 6.95-mum domain period, uniform periodicity, and 50% duty cycle along the entire crystal length are fabricated by use of a high-voltage multipulse poling method. A maximum power of 1.18 W at 531 nm with 16.8% conversion efficiency is obtained from a 2-mm-thick, 25-mm-long MgO:LiNbO3 crystal; the corresponding internal green power and conversion efficiency are 1.38 W and 19.6%, respectively, whereas the normalized conversion efficiency is 3.3%/W.     A diode end-pumped Nd:YAG laser passively Q-switched by Cr4+:YAG saturable absorber and intracavity frequency-doubled by a LBO nonlinear crystal is described. Using a linear cavity the maximum average power at 1.06-mum fundamental wavelength was 3.3 W, 22.5 kHz repetition rate and 25.2-ns pulses duration. The maximum peak power was 12 kW for an average power of 1.8 W, laser pulses of 17.5-ns duration and 209.3-muJ energy. Intracavity frequency-doubling employing a V-type laser resonator yielded 532-nm green pulses of 226-muJ energy and 86-ns width at 4.2-kHz rate of repetition. The theoretical calculations based on a model of rate of equations show good agreement with the experiments at both fundamental and second-harmonic wavelengths.

    High power blue radiation obtained by intracavity frequency-doubling of a continuous wave diode end-pumped Nd:YAG laser operating on the F-4(3/2) --> I-4(9/2) transition is reported. The maximum output power for the randomly polarized beam at 946 nm was 3.7 W for 9.5 W absorbed pump power at 808 nm; the slope efficiency with respect to the absorbed pump power was 44%. For the polarized fundamental radiation the maximum power was 1.1 W (26% optical-to-optical efficiency with respect to the absorbed power), the laser operating with 38% slope efficiency. Intracavity frequency-doubling by a 2.0-mm thick KNbO3 crystal placed in a linear resonator yielded 159-mW single-ended blue-output with optical conversion efficiency versus the absorbed pump power of 4.8%. Using a V-type resonator increased the blue power at 418 mW with 11.6% optical conversion efficiency in absorbed power; the laser optical conversion efficiency was 6.7%, while the conversion of the available infrared power reached 50%.

    Continuous-wave power of 189 mW at 473 nm with 49% conversion efficiency is generated from a 8.5 mm long uncoated periodically polled MgO:LiNbO3 ridge-type waveguide by frequency doubling of a diode end-pumped Nd:Y3Al5O12 laser at room temperature; the corresponding internal blue power and conversion efficiency were 222 mW and 58%, respectively. The highest conversion efficiency of 63% (74% with respect to the blue internal power) was obtained from a 12 mm long waveguide with 99 mW blue output power.     Continuous-wave power of 0.89 W at 531 nm with 14.3% conversion efficiency is reported at room temperature from a 2-mm-thick periodically polled uncoated MgO:LiNbO3 by single-pass frequency doubling of a diode end-pumped Nd:GdVO4 laser; the corresponding internal green power and conversion efficiency were 1.03 W and 16.5%, respectively. The MgO:LiNbO3 device of 6.95-mum domain period was fabricated by using a high-voltage multi-pulse poling method; uniform periodicity and 50% duty cycle were obtained on the entire 10-mm-long crystal. The sample exhibited an effective nonlinear coefficient of 14pm/V (similar to88% of the ideal nonlinear coefficient), resulting in a measured normalized conversion efficiency of 2.7%/W. To the authors best knowledge this is the highest power ever obtained by quasi-phase matching process at room temperature.

    A structure for quasi-phase matching of large cross section using 5 mol% MgO-doped LiNbO3 (MgO:LN) crystal for high-power wavelength conversion was realized. We have found that the coercive field to invert polarization of the crystal reduces drastically with elevated temperature. The coercive field reduces to 1.2 kV/mm at 250 degreesC, which is about 1/4 compared with that for MgO:LN at room temperature (RT) and about 1/17 of that for LN at RT. 3 mm thick periodically poled MgO:LN has been fabricated with 30 mum period.     We have investigated thermally-induced-birefringence effect in Nd:YAG ceramics and found that depolarization loss of highly Nd/sup 3+/-doped ceramics is much larger than that of conventional Nd:YAG single crystals even at the same absorbed pump power under nonlasing condition. In this paper, however, we report that drastic reduction of depolarization loss is realized in highly Nd/sup 3+/-doped YAG ceramics by laser oscillation. © 2003 IEEE.

    In this paper, we report high-power blue light generation from a periodically polled MgO:LN ridge-type waveguide using a diode end-pumped Nd:YAG laser operating at 946 nm as a fundamental source. Blue-light CW generation of 147 mW for a coupled power at 946 nm of /spl sim/418 mW was obtained.This output power at 473 nm of 147 mW obtained, indicates the potential for high-power SHG laser of the ridge-type waveguide fabricated by ultra-precision machining. © 2003 IEEE.

    In this paper, we investigate field poling characteristics and demonstrate periodical poling in 3mm-thick MgO:LN crystals. LiNbO/sub 3/ (LN) is an attractive material for quasiphase-matching (QPM) devices because of its large nonlinear coefficient. Although periodically poled LN (PPLN) devices can perform many kinds of wavelength conversion such as second harmonic generation, difference frequency generation and optical parametric oscillation, problems about photorefractive damage and high coercive field remain in PPLNs. MgO-doped LN (MgO:LN) has been investigated and developed because of its higher resistance to photorefractive damage and a lower coercive field than that of nondoped LN. Therefore, MgO:LN is a suitable material for large aperture QPM devices for high-power/short-pulse operation. © 2003 IEEE.

    An updated absolute scale of the second-order nonlinear susceptibilities of various dielectric and semiconductor materials is presented. It is based on our recent redetermination for several important nonlinear-optical materials and the earlier reliable values. The problems that were unresolved or overlooked in earlier measurements are pointed out, and the guidelines for obtaining accurate values of the nonlinear susceptibilities are presented through the detailed description of the measurement procedure applied in our determination.

    The depolarization caused by thermally induced birefringence in Y3Al5O12 lasers is intrinsically reduced without any compensation by use of rods cut in other directions than (111). Using a (110)-cut crystal, one can expect the depolarization to become less than 1/10 of that caused in a conventional (111)-cut crystal. (C) 2002 American Institute of Physics.

    A tunable single-axial-mode oscillation was demonstrated in a diode-pumped 400 mum thick Yb:YAG microchip green laser with 250 mW CW output power, which emits maximum green power of 520 mW. Tuning from 515.3 to 537.7 nm (Deltalambda = 22.4 nm, Deltav = 24.4 THz) with single-axial-mode was obtained using a double quartz-birefringent filter set in a coupled cavity and an angle tuned LBO at room temperature. The tuning range meets Ar+ laser and frequency-doubled Nd:YAG laser wavelengths.     The depolarization caused by thermally induced birefringence in YAG lasers is intrinsically reduced without any compensation by use of a (110)-cut crystal. The depolarization can be made smaller by more than one order than that in a (111)-cut crystal. This reduction is realized in both the side pumping of a uniformly doped disk/rod combined with an aperture or of a composite material in which the doped YAG is surrounded by the undoped YAG, and the end pumping with a focused beam.

    The high resolution spectroscopic and emission decay properties of Nd:YAG ceramics with up to 9 at.% Nd show that no major changes from the single crystals other than those induced by the increased Nd concentration occur and indicate that these materials can be used for construction of efficient and high power lasers.     The second-order nonlinear-optical coefficients of CsLiB6O 10 have been absolutely determined for visible-to-ultraviolet second-harmonic wavelengths. The measurements were made by use of the wedge technique at the fundamental wavelengths of 0.532, 0.852, and 1.064 μm. The following values were obtained: d36 = 0.92 pm/V at 0.532 μm, d36 = 0.83 pm/V and d14 = 0.69 pm/V at 0,852 μm, and d36 = 0.74 pm/V at 1.064 μm. © 2001 Optical Society of America.

    Video monitoring of periodical poling process is demonstrated in LiNbO3 using transparent liquid electrodes.     A diode-pumped Nd:YAG laser, passively Q-switched by a Cr4+:YAG saturable absorber and intra-cavity frequency-doubled by a LBO crystal is described. The device produces 532 nm pulses of 263-muJ energy and 87.8-ns width at a pulse repetition rate of 3.8 kHz. The dynamics of the pulse formation is discussed by introducing a nonlinear loss term, caused by the frequency conversion, into the coupled rate equations describing the operation of passively Q-switched lasers.

The spectroscopic parameters were evaluated and found that Nd3+:Bi4Si3O12 has a large quenching parameter (3.6 at.%) and very wide bandwidth in both transition of emission (23.1 nm) and absorption (16.1 nm).     Diode-pumped laser oscillation in highly Nd3+-doped polycrystalline Y3Al5O12 (YAG) ceramics has been demonstrated. The Nd:YAG ceramics are highly transparent; the loss of a 2.3 at. % neodymium-doped ceramic is as low as that of a 0.9 at. % Nd:YAG single crystal. The high doping of Nd3+ ions realizes large pump absorption; a 6.6 at. %-doped ceramic has an absorption coefficient of 60.4 cm(-1) at 808 nm. The same concentration quenching parameter is obtained between the Nd:YAG ceramics and Nd:YAG single crystals. A laser using an 847-mu m-thick 3.4 at. % Nd:YAG ceramic as a gain medium operates at 2.3 times higher output power than the same laser with a 719-mu m-thick 0.9 at. % Nd:YAG single-crystal gain medium.     Sublattice-reversed GaAs crystals grown by the lattice-matched GaAs/Ge/GaAs (100) and (111) sublattice reversal epitaxy have been characterized by reflection high-energy electron diffraction and cross-sectional transmission electron microscopy. The sublattice reversal in the GaAs/Ge/GaAs (100) system has been verified to be assisted by self-annihilation of the antiphase domains generated at the GaAs/Ge interface. The sublattice reversal in the GaAs/Ge/GaAs (111) system seems to result from the unique structure of the As-terminated Ge (111) surfaces.     We have demonstrated second-harmonic generation (SHG) from GaP/AIP multilayers an GaP(111)A substrates based on quasi-phase matching (QPM) for the fundamental standing wave. Theoretical calculation predicted that the SWG power increases with increasing number of GaP/AIP multilayers because of their small absorption coefficient in the spectral range of second-harmonic light, which is in contrast to the case of GaAs/AlAs QPM multilayers. In the transmission SHG measurement using a frequency-tunable Ti:Sapphire laser as a fundamental wave source, maximum SWG power was obtained at a fundamental wavelength of 990 nm from the five-pair GaP/AIP QPM multilayers. The wavelength conversion efficiency was measured to be 9.8 x 10(-10)%/W, which was smaller than the theoretical value of 6.5 x 10(-8)%/W.

    We developed a tunable intracavity frequency-doubled Yb:YAG microchip laser and applied this tunable green laser to wavelength-multiplexed holographic memory, The tunable Yb:YAG green laser output a maximum power of 520 mW and a tuning range of 22.4 nm with single frequency. Moreover, we improved tuning range of fundamental oscillation and maximum tuning range of 84.5 run (lambda =1024.1similar to1108.6 nm) was obtained. Additionally, we investigate edge-pumped Yb:YAG microchip lasers to achieve high power and brightness laser performances.

    We developed a tunable intracavity frequency-doubled Yb:YAG microchip laser and applied this tunable green laser to wavelength-multiplexed holographic memory, The tunable Yb:YAG green laser output a maximum power of 520 mW and a tuning range of 22.4 nm with single frequency. Moreover, we improved tuning range of fundamental oscillation and maximum tuning range of 84.5 run (lambda =1024.1similar to1108.6 nm) was obtained. Additionally, we investigate edge-pumped Yb:YAG microchip lasers to achieve high power and brightness laser performances.

    Sublattice reversal epitaxy is demonstrated in lattice-matched GaAs/Ge/GaAs (100) and (111) systems using molecular beam epitaxy, and confirmed by reflection high energy electron diffraction and preferential etching. In the GaAs/Gc/GaAs (100) system, the sublattice reversal is assisted by self-annihilation of the antiphase domains generated at the GaAs/Ge interface. In the GaAs/Ge/GaAs (111) system, the sublattice reversal results from the unique structure of the As-terminated Ge (111) surfaces. The quality of the sublattice-reversed GaAs crystal is investigated using cross-sectional transmission electron microscopy. A method to fabricate a periodically domain-inverted structure using sublattice reversal epitaxy is demonstrated for the GaAs/Ge/GaAs (100) system.

    The second-order nonlinear-optical coefficients of beta-BaB2O4 have been absolutely determined for visible to ultraviolet second-harmonic wavelengths: The fundamental wavelengths used were 0.532, 0.852, 1.064, and 1.313 mu m. The following values were obtained by use of the wedge technique: d(22) = 2.6 pm/V at 0.532 mu m; d(22) = 2.3 pm/V at 0.852 mu m; d(22) = 2.2 pm/V, d(33) = 0.04 pm/V, d(31) = 0.04 pm/V, and d(15) = 0.03pm/V at 1.064 mu m; and d(22) = 1.9 pm/V at 1.313 mu m.     Optical data storage in volume holograms has been an exciting prospect for high data storage technology since the digital volume holographic storage system was demonstrated. Angle and wavelength-multiplexed recordings have excellent potential for a large storage capacity. Recently we developed a diode-pumped single-frequency and tunable Yb:YAG microchip laser. We demonstrate the angle and wavelength multiplexed recording by using the tunable intracavity frequency-doubled Yb:YAG green laser.

    The absolute scale of the second-order nonlinear-optical coefficients of several important nonlinear-optical materials has been obtained with improved accuracy. Second-harmonic generation, parametric fluorescence, and difference-frequency generation measurements have been made at several wavelengths in the near-infrared region. The second-harmonic generation measurement was performed at the fundamental wavelengths of 1.548, 1.533, 1.313, 1.064, and 0.852 mu m. The materials measured included congruent LiNbO3, 1%MgO:LiNbO3, 5%MgO:LiNbO3, LiTaO3, KNbO3, KTiOPO4, KH2PO4, quartz, GaAs, GaP, alpha-ZnS, CdS, ZnSe, and CdTe. We made the parametric fluorescence measurement to determine the nonlinear-optical coefficients of congruent LiNbO3 and 5%MgO:LiNbO3 at pump wavelengths of 0.532 and 0.488 mu m. We made the difference-frequency generation measurement for congruent LiNbO3 at a pump wavelength of 0.532 mu m. The second-harmonic generation, parametric fluorescence, and difference-frequency generation measurements yielded consistent data on the nonlinear-optical coefficients of the materials. We found that many of the currently accepted standard values are overestimated because of neglect of the multiple-reflection effect in (nearly) plane-parallel-plate samples. The dispersion of the nonlinear-optical coefficients showed that Miller's a is barely constant over the wavelength range measured and thus that Miller's rule is not so good as other methods for wavelength scaling of the nonlinear-optical coefficients.     We have redetermined the absolute values of the nonlinear optical coefficient, d31, of LiNbO3 by parametric fluorescence and, for the first time, by difference frequency generation measurements to resolve the considerable discrepancy that existed between the values determined by second-harmonic generation (SHG) and parametric fluorescence. We obtain d31=4.8±0.5 and 4.3±0.5 pm/V at the pump wavelengths of 488 and 532 nm, respectively, in reasonable agreement with the SHG data. It appears that the previous parametric fluorescence value, d31=5.8 pm/V, was overestimated. © 1995, Japan Society of Applied Physics. All rights reserved.

    A medium-power all-solid-state diode-pumped Nd : YAG laser, passively Q-switched employing Cr^<4+> : YAG as saturable absorber and intra-cavity frequency doubled by a LBO crystal, has been developed. The device produces 263-μJ, 87.8-ns pulses of 〜3.0kW peak power, with 1.0-W average power output at 532nm. The dynamics of the pulse formation is discussed by introducing a nonlinear loss term caused by the frequency doubler into the coupled rate equations describing the operation of saturable absorber passively Q-switched lasers.

    We have succeeded in the growth of lithium tetraborate with periodic twin structure forming during growth by applying an electric field or manipulating a growth orientation relative to the twin boundary. Since lithium tetraborate is not ferroelectric, the conventional method for the formation of the quasi-phase matching structure (QPM) is not possible. By revealing the formation mechanism of (100) and (010) twins, we managed alternative twin formation with these orientations, which made the periodic twin structure with small period. This structure can be served as a QPM structure and the secondary harmonic generation of Nd:YAG laser was successfully obtained. It is a remarkable result that the QPM formation is possible for non-ferroelectric material.

    By employing a new concept of stoichiometry of a material where the activity of any constituent element could be unity, we developed a new lithium tantalate with MgO doping, cs-MgO:LT (Li2O: Ta2O5: MgO = 40.8:50.0:9.2), that is stoichiometric and coincident with the congruent composition. Because of this coincidence, cs-MgO:LT does not yield crystallization electromotive force and does not show segregation during growth even for ionic species. A bulk crystal was grown from the melt of the cs-MgO:LT composition via the Czochralski (CZ) method, and it showed excellent compositional homogeneity, which was proved by the constant distribution of the Curie temperature throughout the crystal.

    We have accurately measured the second-order nonlinear-optical coefficients of SiC, which is expected to be a material for next-generation high-power frequency-conversion devices. We carried out the measurements with several combinations of different manufacturers, polytypes, surface orientations of the samples, and different measurement techniques at the fundamental wavelength of 1.064 μm. The same accurate values were obtained for the same polytype samples, and d33 of 4H-SiC was found to be 6 % smaller than that of 6H-SiC. The magnitudes of the nonlinear-optical coefficients determined in this research should be useful for precise design of high-power and highly efficient frequency-conversion devices using SiC.

    1. We have optimized device fabrication process for AlGaAs waveguiding QPM devices. Corrugations, a major cause of the large propagation loss, are shown to be caused by the anisotropic surface diffusion of Ga atoms. We have achieved almost corrugation-free regrowth by using a low-temperature MBE process.
    2. GaP sublattice reversal epitaxy has been successfully demonstrated for the first time. AlGaP-based QPM devices can be used with high-power 1-μm pump lasers because of their small two-photon absorption coefficients.
    3. Conversion efficiencies attainable in high-index-contrast AlGaAs waveguiding QPM devices has been theoretically investigated for the first time. We have shown that normalized conversion efficiencies over 40,000 %/W/cm2 can be obtained for SHG for 1.5 μm fundamental light.
    4. We have proposed a new QPM scheme in bent waveguides utilizing periodical sign reversal with periodic change of propagation direction by 90° instead of periodical inversion of crystal structures.
    5. We have investigated polarity characterization techniques of GaN crystals and succeeded in fabricating periodically inverted GaN films. In addition, nonlinear optical properties of GaN and SiC have been characterized in detail, by using high quality bulk single-crystalline samples.
    6. A 300-W CW operation of Yb:YAG/ceramic YAG hybrid edge-pumped laser has been demonstrated. By optimizing laser cavity configuration, much improved transverse mode characteristics, M^2 = 17, has been achieved for 230-W CM operation.

    The aim of our research is to clear the new direction of ceramic laser. Especially, to create the functional optical devices for improved laser system, we have tried to control the grain and domain boundary as following ;
    (1)Research of grain boundary control for the high-transparent ceramic material : To design the spectral property, we have developed disordered Nd : Y_3Sc_XAl_<(5-X)>O_<12> and Yb : Y_3Sc_XAl_<(5-X)>O_<12>. Additionally, by combining Nd : Y_3Al_5O_<12> and Nd : Y_3Sc_XAl_<(5-X)>O_<12>, we have add the new function.
    (2)Research of spectroscopic analysis and laser design : To establish the design criteria, we have characterized the spectroscopic property of these laser ceramics.
    (3)Wavelength extension : To overcome the limited lasing wavelength, we have developed the fabrication method of new field poling method for periodically poled MgO deoped LiNbO_3 (PPMgLN). By using 5-mm thickness and 36-mm long PPMgLN, we have succeeded in 100-mJ and 70% optical parametric oscillation.
    (4)Hot band laser upper level direct pumping : We have demonstrated the quantum defect improvement by applying the laser upper level direct pumping to these ceramic lasers.
    (5)Development of the high brightness microchip ceramic laser : By using Yb : Y_3Sc_XAl_<(5-X)>O_<12>, we have demonstrated the ultrafast pulse generation of 280fs, which is the world record in our knowledge. Otherwise, CW output power of 340 W has been obtained in the Yb : YAG single crystal and YAG ceramics composite structure, which corresponded to 57 kW/cm^3 output power density.

    1.GaAs導波路型光パラメトリックデバイスの作製と評価
    赤外域で動作する超小型光パラメトリックデバイスを念頭に置いて,QPM周期7.6μmのGaAs/AlGaAsリッジ型導波路を作製し,長さ2mmのデバイスでパラメトリック蛍光(parametric fluorescence : PF)測定をおこなった。前年度に引き続き,デバイス特性の評価をおこない,温度チューニング特性が設計どおりであること,出力パワーが理論計算と同程度得られており,妥当な特性を発揮していることをあきらかにした。また,伝搬ロスが20dB/cm弱あり,これがデバイスの長尺化を妨げていることもわかった。
    2.波長変換デバイスにおける伝搬ロスの影響に関する検討
    差周波発生デバイス,光パラメトリックデバイス,バックワード光パラメトリックデバイスについて,伝搬ロスがその特性に与える影響をシミュレーションにより評価した。SROの光パラメトリックデバイスの場合は,共振器を構成しているため,わずかな伝播ロスが3桁にも及ぶ発振閾値の増大を招くのに対して,共振器を構成しない差周波発生デバイス,バックワード光パラメトリックデバイスにおいては数db/cmのロスの存在かにおいても発振閾値などの特性パラメータ劣化はfactor程度にとどまることがあきらかとなった。

  • High performance widely tunable chromachip lasers

    As part of the "High performance widely tunable chromachip lasers" research project we have investigated new types of solid-state microchip lasers and nonlinear wavelength conversion by the Quasi-Phase-Matching process as follows :
    (1) We have demonstrated highly efficient laser oscillation using highly concentrated Nd-doped YAG ceramics by grain boundary controlling. The spectrum bandwidth was controlled by changing the composition structure : Nd : YSAG ceramics that have Al sights partially replaced by Sc has 5 times wider the gain band width compared with Nd : YAG.
    (2) A new model that describes theoretically the thermal birefringence in high power state lasers by changing the orientation of crystal axis from <111> to <110> or <100>-axis cut without any other internal optics into the optical resonator was developed. Moreover, a new pumping method that reduces the heat generation was proposed and experimentally proved.
    Directly pumping into the emitting level of Nd : YAG lasers improves the quantum defect but the absorption efficiency is poor for low concentrated Nd : YAG (1.0-at.% Nd, usually used in construction of lasers). We demonstrated that highly Nd-doped YAG ceramics has the potential to overcome this disadvantage, assuring high absorption efficiency for this new pumping scheme. Finally, simulation source code by FEM that estimate the heat generation and its thermal problem was developed.
    (3) We have developed an 'in-situ' poling system that optimizes the QPM fabrication process of MgO : LiNbO_3 that is characterized by a high damage threshold. Then we have realized a periodically poled 3-mm thick MgO : LiNbO_3. Moreover, we found the way for broadening the acceptance bandwidth by using d_31 (= d_32) instead of the normal d_33 coefficient.
    (4) During this research project were published 25 scientific papers and 6 review papers, 33 presentations were given at international meetings and 24 at domestic meetings, as well as 12 invited talks. Finally, we have received 4 awards.

  • β−BaB_2O_4の2次非線形光学定数の精密測定

    β-BaB_2O_4(BBO)は吸収端が190nmと短く,紫外域まで波長変換が可能な材料として実用化を目指した研究が精力的に行われている。ところが最も基本的な物理量である2次非線形光学定数の測定例がBBOでは極めて少なかった。本研究ではBBOの非線形光学定数を可視から紫外第2高調波波長の領域にわたって精密に測定し,その絶対値を決定した。
    測定試料はソニー中央研究所久保田研究室でチョクラルスキー法により成長したものを提供していただいた。基本波波長1.313μm,1.064μm,0.852μm,0.532μmにおいて,d_<22>をウェッジ法を用いた絶対測定により求めた。各波長での測定用光源には,いずれも単一縦モード連続発振で動作する,DFBレーザ,半導体レーザ励起Nd:YAGリングレーザ,Ti:サファイアレーザ,半導体レーザ励起Nd:YAG SHリングレーザをそれぞれ用いた。また,その他の独立な成分d_<33>,d_<31>,d_<15>は値が小さく上記の光源では解析に十分なパワーの第2高調波が得られなかったため,基本波光源にQスイッチNd:YAGレーザを用い,波長1.064μmでd_<22>との間で相対測定を行った。得られた測定データに対しては試料内での基本波,第2高調波の多重反射を考慮した解析を行った。
    その結果,d_<22>の絶対値は基本波波長1.313,1.064,0.852,0.532μmでそれぞれ1.9,2.2,2.3,2.6pm/Vと決定した。また,1.064μmでの相対測定から得られた他の成分の絶対値は,それぞれd_<33>=0.04pm/V,d_<31>=0.04Pm/V,d_<15>=0.03pm/Vで,いずれもd_<22>の2%以下と小さいことがわかった。各波長でのd_<22>の値から求められるMillerのΔの値は測定誤差(±5%以下)を考慮しても波長に対して一定であるとは言えず,したがって,本研究のように各波長毎に非線形光学定数を測定することが正しい値を得るためには重要である。
    BBOに限らず紫外第2高調波波長での非線形光学定数の測定例はほとんど無く,今回,特に0.532μmで非線形光学定数を決定したことにより,今後BBOを紫外第2高調波波長における参照物質として用いることができる。
