    Abstract

    This study explores the graduation of initial public offering (IPO) firms and regulatory reforms in junior stock markets. Using firms listed on the two junior stock markets of the Tokyo Stock Exchange (TSE), the Market of the high-growth and emerging stocks (MOTHERS) and JASDAQ Securities Exchange (JASDAQ), we examine the factors that affect the time to graduation to the TSE main markets. We find that young IPO firms and those with high research and development (R&D) intensity are less likely to graduate from the TSE junior markets (MOTHERS and JASDAQ). The results also reveal that listing regulations on graduation to the TSE main market, which were introduced only to the MOTHERS, but not to the JASDAQ, accelerate the graduation of IPO firms. Furthermore, we provide evidence that IPO firms that ultimately graduate to the TSE main markets exhibit better performance.

    Abstract

    While patents are a valuable resource ensuring the competitive advantage of firms, there is limited evidence on the role of patents in the survival and exit strategies of new firms. To fill the gap in the literature, we examine whether the effects of patenting on new firm survival vary according to exit routes (bankruptcy, merger, and voluntary liquidation), while considering the endogeneity of patenting. We use a large-scale sample of new firms in the Japanese manufacturing and information services sectors for the period 2003–2013. The findings indicate that new firms with a higher stock of patents are less likely to go bankrupt. Conversely, new firms with a higher stock of patents are more likely to exit via merger. These findings are consistent, regardless of whether patent stock is measured based on the patent applications or granted patents. Furthermore, we provide evidence that new firms with a higher stock of granted patents are more likely to voluntarily liquidate their businesses.

    Plain English Summary

    Can new firms enjoy a “patent premium” in terms of survival and exit outcomes? The findings of this study indicate that (1) patenting reduces the risk of bankruptcy, and (2) it increases the odds of exit via merger and voluntary liquidation. On the one hand, patenting ensures that new firms obtain competitive advantages, and thus, survive in the product market. On the other hand, it enables new firms to pursue successful exit strategies in the markets for ideas. This study concludes that new firms can enjoy a patent premium in terms of survival and exit outcomes. In promoting sustainable economic growth via entrepreneurship, policymakers need to shift their focus from creating more firms to creating innovative firms.

    This paper explores the initial public offering (IPO) strategy of start-up firms. Using an original survey of start-up firms in the Japanese manufacturing and information service industries, we investigate what factors are associated with the intention to go public. It is found that among start-up firms, those investing more heavily in research and development (R&D) are more likely to wish to go public. Furthermore, we provide evidence that spin-offs and family businesses are less likely to have IPO intentions, and that entrepreneur-specific characteristics affect IPO intentions, with younger and highly educated entrepreneurs tending to desire to go public.

    This article aims to explore capital structures, using data on Japanese start-up firms. I examine how startup firms change their capital structures over time, focusing on debt financing that plays a central role in start-up financing. It is found that start-up firms are more likely to use debt financing than equity financing. Additionally, I examine the determinants of debt financing with a dynamic panel data model. The results reveal that start-up firms with less cash flow, those with a higher growth rate, and those with a higher proportion of fixed assets are more likely to use debt financing. Moreover, the results indicate that start-up firms' capital structures tend to follow previous patterns.

    This study empirically examines whether firm-specific characteristics, including initial ownership structure and financing, and entrepreneur-specific characteristics affect exit (sellout) strategy, such as initial public offering (IPO) and merger, in addition to post-entry performance, using data on Japanese start-up firms. The major findings of this study are as follows: (1) high-tech and high-risk start-ups are more likely to go public earlier than others, (2) start-up firms that rely more on are more likely to survive, and (3) start-up firms managed by entrepreneurial inventors are more likely to use equity financing, while those reliant on debt financing are less likely to grow at a higher rate.

    This project comprehended the status of startup finance and analyzed the mechanism of fund raising and its effects in Japan. Our main achievements include: (1) the development of data on startup firms using publicly available statistics and our original surveys, and the clarification of the current status of startup finance in Japan with some international and historical comparisons; (2) the clarification of the methods of startup finance, determinants of financial constraint, and ex post performance of startup firms; and (3) the clarification of detailed status of, and mechanisms behind credit guarantee, IPOs and the exits, the role of banks, and other issues related to startup firms by focusing on individual funding sources.

    Based on a series of repeated surveys since November 2008 for new incorporations after January 2007, we constructed an original dataset on the founders' characteristics, financing, employment, R & D and innovation, and firm performance especially for R & D-oriented start-up firms. Using this dataset, we empirically examined the effects of founders' human capital on R & D by start-up firms(R & D funding, research collaboration, and innovation outcomes). We also carried out complementary studies on self-employment income by using anonymous comprehensive micro data from an official census. Moreover, we conducted a survey and several case studies on intellectual clusters and cluster policies to investigate the relationship between cluster policy, entrepreneurship and innovation and to evaluate cluster policies from international perspectives
