  • Intergenerational Wealth Elasticity in Japan Reviewed

    Language:English   Publishing type:Research paper (scientific journal)   Publisher:WILEY

This study estimates the intergenerational wealth elasticity using original Japanese survey data and assesses factors explaining the intergenerational wealth elasticity, such as income, educational level, bequests and preferences. The age-adjusted elasticity of child wealth with respect to parental wealth ranges from 0.266 to 0.367, and transition matrices indicate that the intergenerational transmission of wealth persists more strongly in the tails of the distributions. The correlation between parent and child wealth mainly stems from income, education and bequests, which jointly constitute 63.9% of the wealth elasticity.

In order to study the community mechanism, which is expected to become more important due to the falling birthrate and aging population, which will exacerbate the problem of government budget deficits, etc., this project has constructed panel data over three waves of online experimental and questionnaire surveys based on behavioral economics methods. This survey is part of a major project of the OECD's Trustlab, which has been conducted in nine countries so far with a representative sample of more than 1,000 people in each country, but Japan is the only country for which panel data have been constructed. In analyzing the data to date, we have found that trust, altruism, and reciprocity measured in incentivized experiments have changed significantly, with positive correlations, from the first wave to the second wave, which were spaced about 6 months apart.

The purpose of this research is to examine the degree of succession of economic inequality over generation, and the determinants of intergenerational social mobility. Previous researches found liquidity constraints is one candidate to affect the intergenerational social mobility. This research estimates the intergenerational social mobility, finds the characteristics of the household that could not go on to college because of financial reasons, and finds the relationships between the liquidity constraints and the intergenerational social mobility.
